Were you self sponsored or did the department sponsor you for the academy?

Peace is not the absence of conflict, but the presence of justice.

Do you feel that it hurts an applicant(at the department or others) to apply for a department when he/she hasn't gone through the academy yet, and do NOT get the job?
There are departments I would like to apply for, but of course they state that they take preference towards those who are MCOLES certifiable(went through the academy.)

In Minnesota it's part of the required Associated Degree in LE so 99% is self sponsored though college and the rest of the required training.
I was sponsored, but only two others in my class of 28 were also sponsored. Around here, it's much more common for people to put themselves through the academy. Some of the agencies have limited amounts of sponsorships, however those positions are extremely competitive, moreso than if you try to get hired after putting yourself through the academy.
It's a totally different system from where I came from. Up in Kentucky, everyone is sponsored. You can't go to the academy unless you already have a job and an agency paying your way there.
Ugh...i want to move to Kentucky!Originally Posted by PatrickM98

Same in Oregon. If I had to have put myself through a police academy, I'd probably still be selling cars. At the time I took the job, I wasn't all that sure I wanted to be a cop anyway. I just needed a job.Originally Posted by PatrickM98
When I came on, my dept had it's own academy we went through. Now they send people to the state academy and then give them another 8 or so weeks more locally before they go on the street.
Apparently, I'm supposed to be more angry about what Mitt Romney does with his money than what Barack & Michelle Obama do with mine

Our as in most in Florida do not sponsor anymore. They do a long interview process and they hire you. They then pay you as a cadet while you go through the academy.
Then you take the state exam and then get sworn in. Then KA Ching
