The only department I know of in my area that has their own Academy is Detroit. I'll be taking the advice of some of the officers here at RP and will be avoiding that department.

Troopers also have their own academy...but I have no interest in State.

We don't even have anything like a state final exam. You pass each section of the academy and that's it, you're certified as completing it. Actually, I like this system much better than if we had to put ourselves through.

The pay goes up remarkably after the first 6 months, about 5 grand a year if I recall correctly. That's about the time you've completed most of the formal schooling. Then you get to look forward to another year of probation and FTO's.

An amateur will train until they get it right. A professional will train until they can't get it wrong.

Holy crap, i just found a department that has it's own Academy, is NOT detroit, and is hiring recruits!

    I'm estatic :D

    Flint PD by the way.

That makes two local departments that I know of in michigan, with their own academy.

My department has their own academy, you can't be hired if you went through a "pre-service" type academy were you pay your own way. Well you could be hired, you just would have to still go through our academy (which is about 4 times as long and much more difficult physically than the pre-service ones).

In Kentucky, there are only four academic choices.

DOCJT's Academy in Richmond (For all city officer and deputies, as well as KVE)
KSP's Academy in Frankfort (For all state troopers)
    Lousville Metro Academy (Louisville officers)
Lexington/Fayette County Urban Gov't Academy (LFUCG Officers)

I think that's all, at least. I know for sure that there is only one way to become a police officer in Kentucky. You must be hired by a department and sworn in to attend the DOCJT academy. The department must then sponsor you. Which is great, since you're being paid and someone else is paying for your training. We also have the POPS (Peace Officer Physical Standards? I think?) that qualifies you for incentive pay each year if your department participates.

Enough with the praise I guess, although I have heard that the DOCJT academy is recognized as one of the better training centers in the nation. It could just be propaganda though. ;) Does anyone know the true scoop? And whether Texas would accept my DOCJT certification with just penal code classes? ;)
