    weed and traffic stops

    First post, but serious question.

I've known probably a half dozen friends who smoke weed while driving (definitely NOT something I condone) and I was wondering why none of them have ever gotten in trouble even though they all get pulled over as often as I do (I dont smoke btw). I've been along a couple times, and was SURE the cop could smell the weed, but they gave warnings both times- one time was for a burned out turn signal and said "drive safely" another he was just like "Do me a favor and slow down a little".

My question is I'm wondering if some of you folks are looking the other way a teeeeeny bit, because the explanation of these people over the course of several years and dozens of traffic stops all running into police officers with severe sinus congestion just doesn't sound realistic to me. :p

And please don't give me crap about who I hang out with, some of these folks I'd trust with my life and I know around here at any social gathering if someone gets out a little weed half the people will take it if offered and half just sort of ignore it and don't care. This is WA state btw. Den of Satan himself.

How are you so SURE they could smell it? Next time your friends gets stopped, tell him to just hand the weed over and we will see how much trouble they get in.

If I smell it, they can either hand it over voluntarily or one of our pooches will come find it. ANY drug arrest here ( including a small amount or just a pipe) results in a 6 month loss of license and I love to see them get suspended

If the passenger can smell it clear as day I imagine someone standing by the driver's window could too. And maybe he's also gonna notice the visine on the dashboard, book of rolling papers, 3 legalization related bumper stickers and pot leaf sticker in the window.

And I didn't mention the stories where they found the weed/ pipe, then gave it back and told my buddy to stay out of trouble. Or show up for a noise complaint at a house party and see pipes or bongs lying in plain sight and ignore them.... as well as ignoring the obvious youth of all the underage people with a beer in hand.

Maybe seattle is just a little different.

Hope you don't trust them with your life when they are driving with that s**t in their system. Are you saying all the cops are not charging people for these offences or just the few you and your club mates happen to come across all the time? maybe the next knock on the door may be the boys in black executing a drug warrant. I do not "turn a blind eye" to this kind of law breaking and no of no cops here who would.

I don't buy that an officer would turn the other way if they smell weed. At least I would never do that....

I love to get that smell. We strip search the occupants then, just to make sure their not smuggling any, we tear the car apart, take off all the panneling, the rear seat, sometimes the dash has to come off, etc. it only takes about half an hour but usually takes them about two hours to get it put back to gether, by then there wishing they hadn't smoked in the car.

And please don't give me crap about who I hang out with, some of these folks I'd trust with my life

That's nice. Because, when they do get caught, and sooner or later they will, they will have one thing to trade with the police for leniency. And, that one thing will be the people they know who use and sell dope.

Friendship and trust are the first things that go out the window when someone finds out the party is over and they are heading to jail.

Everybody is a badass until they get to lockup, then they start puking their guts. And, when yuppies from the suburbs start ratting out their buddies, even we can't get them to shut up.

Or even worse, one of them has already been busted and is out working on you and the source you use, right now. Something you ought to be thinking about.

PS - How many times are you guys going to keep thinking these scenarios up before you get bored and move on?

I looked around a bit and found some interesting statistics for the city of seattle. In 2002 70% of voters voted to direct the police to make marijuana their "lowest priority"

http://www.seattle.gov/council/mpp/default.htm (home of the marijuana policy review board) and

http://www.seattle.gov/council/mpp/minutes040621.pdf (minutes from their June 21 meeting).

In the first half of 2004, in Seattle, a city of 500,000 people, there were only 36 misdemeanor and 9 felony marijuana related cases, and 22 of the misdemeanor cases were dropped at the request of the city attorney.

To compare those 9 felony cases, there were 3,500 felony drug cases from seattle involving OTHER drugs in 2003. Plus a couple thousand DUI's.

I have a HARD time believing that the police caught people with marijuana- the most commonly used illegal drug- only 45 times in 6 months, but other drugs 3,500 times in a year. And drunk drivers a couple thousand times too. They should have caught more than 45 people with weed just by inventorying drunk drivers' cars.

Two reasons, aside from tree huggers manipulating numbers to make themselves look better.

    1) Seattle is the Tree Huggin capital of the US. All non-bathing dope smoking anit world punks gather and live there.

20 In a city as big as Seattle, there are more important things to worry about than Pot.

One can only be so Open Minded before all that mind **** spills out, stains and ruins everything.
