    How much you gotta say?

I like this site forum a whole bunch, while I read other threads all sorts of silyl questions pop into my head about if this or maybe that and stuff.

So ok, after reading all kinds if funny response you cops have posted when dealing with people you have pulled over. i was wondering.....

Say Jow Blow gets pulled over alot, and always in his opinion of course, the officer is sarcastic with him. whats the bare absolute minimun Joe blow has to iteract with the said officer?

To clarify, says its a speeding stop, and Mr. Blow has no warrants, nothing wrong with his car etc,etc..
I am NOT a security guard!!!

You simply answer the officers questions and do what he asks.

And Joe Blow needs to quit driving so poorly.

He need not say a word to me. He MUST be able to display his drivers license, registration and proof of insurance when demanded. He does not have to sign the ticket ( some states will lock you up for refusing) and once released, can drive off without ever having said a word to me.

Sometimes I used to wish half the people I pulled over never said anything to me. A lot of people thought they had to hold court along the roadside and argue their citation right there.

Reason for stop, request name and address and licence, conduct PBT, explain the $$ on the ticket, points and how to pay, please have a safe journey. One of my brother officers says even less.

Politely ask the officer if you can pre-pay the ticket .....to which you will get the response: "Please refer to the information sheet i have included with your citation, it will instruct you on how to pre-pay."

Everybody has the right to remain silent. Not everyone has the ability. It is those people who I love to go to court for. I have made stops where the only thing close to a coherent phrase was a grunt that resembled a fu@k you. You have everything you need to have and I am content. If not, you got problems.

Name and address is required. Beyond that you can sit and stare at me blankly if you wish. I do require you to blow into my little machine, and I will ask for a reason you sped/failed to obey traffic light/didn't wear seatbelt, etc, but you aren't required to give me an answer on that one. that's the bare minimum, and of course, I might consider that rude and notice your rear tyre is a little bald, or your indicator isn't functioning properly and conduct a roadworthy check on your vehicle.

For best results, see creech's response.

If you rob a gas station, you're only going to get about $100, but I get to see a K9 dog use your arm as a chew toy. For all I care you can keep the $100.

I like it when people tell me " I'll see you in court". Little do they realize that I will be paid to be there ( on duty) or get 2 hours of OT if I have to show up off duty.

That's a nice way of looking at it. I get 4 hours OT for traffic court. Cha-ching!

    To answer the original question:
If it were me pulling you over, you don't have to say one word if you don't want to. I'll do all the talking in 4 sentences.

    "License and insurance please."

" I stopped you for _________________. Please stay in your car.

(A few minutes later) Here are your tickets.
