    Aggressive Driving & Pacing

What are the general practices when pacing a vehicle to determine speed? For example, How long and how closely would the vehicle be paced?

Has pacing a vehicle ever been viewed as aggressive driving? My understanding of aggressive driving is simultaneous violation of 2 or more traffic laws. Speeding would be one. Tailgating/following to closley would be another.

Even if what you are trying to imply with the second question were true, LE is exempt from Motor Vehicle Law when in the performance of their duty.

    What, you get a ticket?

First off, think about what you are asking here and apply some common sense. What officer is going to follow you in an attempt to get a clock on your speed that close to you, and if they were to do so, how dumb would you have to be to continue to speed if you are aware they are behind you?

The first questions answers iteself. You pace a vehicle long enough to determine speed, or observe for any additional violations. There is no set time. If you are using vascar or another timing device, you can pace someone from 1/2 mile behind them or more depending on the location.

As to the second question, I have no idea what you're talking about. Are you saying the Officer was driving aggressively while pacing you? Good luck with that one.

Obviously you received a ticket for speeding and are looking for ways to fight the ticket. MY SUGGESTION..

Pay the fine and QUIT SPEEDING..

Alright. Yes, for the record I did receive a citation, which I've paid. This was my first ticket, what I'm looking for is background and understanding.

I'm aware of the performance of duties thing, for some reason it didn't occur to me when I was thinking about this.

Yes, in hindsight my actions were not the best, we all have our off days. However, for the record. I'm a federal 080 w/creds (non-leo, hence the posting) and FLETC equivalent driving training. Given the location/area and time, up until the point I received the ticket, I was relieved the unmarked vehicle behind me was a trooper.

When timing devices are used, are multiple results taken and/or averaged? I know I was gradually increasing speed to keep distance between me and the following car (right or obviously wrong it was my decision, late night, two lane, rural highway, right-hand lane, no other cars). A few weeks later I traveled the same route and noted distance when I spotted the vehicle and where I was stopped. Based on ticketed speed, worse case sineario, I was paced for just under 3.5 minutes. That seems long to me.

The point. On the theory that pacing isn't used often (Please correct me if I'm wrong). Was the time to get a result from a timing device an issue? It seems that anything over a minute would be unacceptable. General operation, how do timing devices work. I assume they would require input, based on landmarks of some kind for a time/distance calc?

I really don't feel like providing you info on how to get out of a deserved ticket. BTW: ALL my speed tickets are paced. I hardly ever use radar.

A 080 you mean an Architect (courtesy of USAJOBS.OPM.GOV) What Federal Agency do you work for? With Cred/s?? What Creds do Architect have, like a badge or your employee ID card?

Lastly FLETC Equivalent Driving Training? So what Equivalent Driving Training did you receive?

alright. I understand not wanting to get too far into practices. running tags for time is understandable. I appreciate some of the useful explainations. I will more carefully construct a question next time. with no verification, I should not have gotten into my own background. it was in response to the less helpful responses. I know about as much about the jobs those who responded as they/you know about mine. i suppose technically the series is 0080. and depending on dept./agency type of work, yes. and not everyone goes to fletc for everything. i don't live under a bridge. i suppose i can get into my details as much as you want to get into yours. thanks again for the helpful responses.

You can tell us more about yourself in the rap sheets. Some of us have no idea what series 0800 or fletc are.

I dont know if this is the same elsewhere, but in the UK if you drove past me at a speed exceeding the speed limit I could guess how fast you were travelling and summons you to court.
    DC can you do this?

do uk courts have much/any trouble with those type of cases. Am I to understand that the citation is excessive speed not specific speed. does the uk have specific speed citations? Is there anything similar in the states?

again, I appologize for the original post. while prompted by a citation it was meant to understand the process/situation better.
