is it illegal to have a radar gun in a normal civilian vehicle? I have a K55 radar unit and just would like to see how fast people go on the street/hwy. any info about this would be great. I live in Ga if that is any help.

Honestly, I don't see where it would be illegal. But, check with your home state's laws.
Why would you though?

I got the unit for free and have nothing else to do with it. I think it would be fun also to set off radar detectors also
What you might check into is the fact that it is a transmitter, and you may need some type of FCC license or permit.Originally Posted by DOHCZC
Sell it on Ebay or give it to a PD that can't afford one. This will end up getting you in trouble.
W/O a license from the FCC you are violating Federal Law.

Many have told me that
"As far as I know most groups are exempt from license requirement. The main reason the license is still on the books is so that jammers cannot be manufactured legally"
This is why I was in question. Also there are many websites that sell radar units that say, there is not an FCC license required
also i see that FCC artical is from 1996. any chance that it could be diffrent now?
On Ohio, anything that transmits is illegal. There are "black box" units that are set at either 35 or 55 mph, and will override the return reflection signal of a K band radar, and cause an error, or a false reading. These were big in the late 70's and early 80's, especially among truck drivers. In Ohio it is straight to jail if it is in a CMV, not sure for passenger vehicle.
Well im not looking to jam radar. just looking to have a little fun is the car, they talk about how bad people speed here in Atlanta so i was thinking that i could see how bad it is. there is no harm in it at all.
The harm is you would be violating Federal Law to operate the gun w/o a license.

Radar units are transceivers, i.e. they both transmit and receive a signal, and operate under rules for the Radiolocation Service contained in Part 90 of the FCC's Rules. As such, they are certified and authorized by the FCC under Parts 2 and 90 of the FCC's Rules.
Under Part 90 of the rules, licensees in the Public Safety Radio Pool (such as state or local government entities), that already have a FCC license for a radio communications system, may operate radar units without obtaining a separate license for them. Radar units may also be used under Part 90 by non-public safety entities such as professional baseball teams, tennis clubs, automobile and boat racing organizations, private transportation firms, railroads, etc., to measure the speed of objects or vehicles. Non-public safety
users, however, are required to obtain a Part 90 license from the Commission for use of radar units.

from looking that this site not all guns need a license from the FCC
http://www.radarco.com/Interceptor.htm
so I guess the output power determines if you need an FCC license or not
I know that all of our RADAR equiptment is licensed through the FCC because the licenses are in the Chiefs office........
Ah haaa, I remember that now ;)Originally Posted by txinvestigator1
