Support for soon-to-be-cops?

Hi there,
I'm very interested in going into the criminal justice career field, but my dad is very unsupportive of it. I received a call this morning from a local police officer regarding meeting just so I could find out more information from them on what policing is all about. I told my dad about it and he said, "Ohhh...okay" He said, "But you have all the information already, why do you need to meet with them?" I told him, "I want to talk with law enforcement in the actual work field who may have already gone through with the training, etc" and he said, "Well, I just don't get it". He does this with everything really that I become interested in...I guess my question is..how did you deal with family members or loved ones when you told them you wanted to go into the criminal justice field?

Be nice to them and go do what you want. It's your life, not their's.

Hey, I'm 19. Yes, I am still very young but I want this no matter what. I'm not too sure what my dad wants me to do with my life. When I was younger, I wanted to be a musician and he said that I should forget that. Nice, huh?

Just be respectful and let him know that you value his opinions, which are based on his experiences.

You can do whatever you want, but if you are living in his home you should prepare to move out on your own. By being prepared, not threatening to move, you also show your maturity.

You know what? I am dying to move out! I'm trying to find a job where I can start earning some money. I do have a job at college right now but I only get maybe $300/month. I'd love to be able to be independent!!
