    Heads up Cover Story

    Just a thought....
It will be interesting to see if the family of the man who died in police custody presses charges against the PD. It always happens, it would almost be comparable to the woman who sued McDonalds for the coffee being too hot. Here the man was completely out of line, police subdue him, he stops breathing. The attorney could argue that the arresting event/procedure caused the man "physical duress" or something of that sort. Could what the officers did constitute deadly force? (If you cant tell I enjoy playing the devil's advocate...especially when it comes to the audacity lawyers have in these instances.) Would be one of those things where you read about it and just shake your head. Gotta love the legal system and the American Way.

    Tevis,

Not sure what you are referring to, but this happens from time to time.

Sometimes due to drug use and the stress on the arrestee during a struggle.

Other times the officers leave a person on their chest while cuffed or even hog tied. A person who has diminished breathing capacity could die this way.

I have no way of knowing what happened in the case to which you refer, but I have listed 2 possible scenerios.

    It happens

    Tevis,

These things happen from time to time. In my military career I have never personally heard of this type of incident, however as you know, when we make an apprehension it is usually of a military person and very rarely a civilian. The military personnel that do put up fights are more physically fit and medical problems are weeded out from the beginning therefore not opening us up to these types of incidents. In my civilian career, I have seen a few, not very many. It happens, that's just a fact of Police Life....

How's USAEUR these days? CINCNAVEUR is still the same. Can't wait to transfer from a place where AFN Radio is a highlight of my day.

USAREUR is sweet, AFN however is not. It was cool for the 1st month i was here, now it's ALL there is on TV.
The article I found was rather humorous, thats all...i can just see some legal action b/c of it happening as it normally always does...craziness.

We just had an incident like that happen here a few months ago. The guy was in his boxers in the front of a major grocery store , screaming his head off. It took 5 officers to get him down - he bit off the tip of the finger of one officer and injured another before subdued. Unfortunately, some yahoo had a video camera and got the whole thing on tape. The 3 officers onscene first are suspended until the internal investigation finishes.

You gotta love our profession, guy gets his fingertip bitten off and others get injured, yet their on IA's hit list. I'll tell ya, some love us, some hate us, most love to hate us...its like those critics who are so quick to jump on the government agencies when something bad happens...if people knew what was REALLY going on, children in kindergarten would be saying they want to be an agent when they grow up. LOL

In our situation, it doesn't really look good for the cops. They had a crowd around them that was getting rowdy while they were struggling with this guy. They were not indicted for criminal charges, but they may lose their jobs (and probably rightfully so based ONLY on the information I know about)
