    Police benefits and pay

I am doing a project for my economics class and we have to make a budget for our life when we are out of college. We have to pick a profession and work out what type of car we want, insurance, and house and all that stuff.

I live in tempe, az and http://tempe.gov/police is the website I am getting my salary info from. I hope to one day work for Tempe Police .

I am wondering if the benefits:
    (copied from site)
Health Insurance--a choice of three plans
    Life Insurance

Do we have to pay for them or are they included with the job. I need to know so I can deduct them from my budget!

I can't imagine that the officers pay, they just have a choice between the plans. My dept offers full medical, dental, vision, prescription, life ins coverage and 50% of those benefits are covered in retirement.

    I'm lateralling to Penn now..

My dept offers a cafeteria plan. They give you a lump sum of money you can spend on either a PPO or HMO. We have 0 vision coverage. Our dental sucks super ***. We have to pay something like $100 per month for our dental and only end up with $1500 coverage per year. Makes no sense. We have no prescription coverage unless its lumped in with your HMO.

Not sure what our retirement benefits are....way too far away.. :(
Be advised, I'm mean nasty and tired. I eat concertina wire and piss napalm and I could put a round through a fleas *** at 300 yards. So why don't you hump somebody else's leg mutt-face before I push yours in.

Around here medical isn't employer paid. And cost of medical insurance runs about $500 a month for a family plan at my department. I've heard of another agensy close by that has an over $700 a month medical. Luckily my wife has state government insurance that's much cheaper and better all around than what my department offers. I did sign up for dental at my department as her's didn't offer dental.

We have to pick a health plan and have the cost deducted from our checks in the federal system. But, they are really good health plans, and they don't cost very much.

We have some life insurance provided free, but most guys pay to have it upped.

We also have full medical, dental, and vision paid for by the department. Sometime back we negotiated in our contract, that we get the same plan when we retire also.

I pay $260/month for health for myself and my wife and $65/month for dental. She's getting lined up for a job with the county so when she gets hired she'll get her own plan dropping me down to $26/month health and $10/month for dental. I have really good health and dental care i must say so i really don't mind paying. Besides, we don't have to spend a cent towards pension so it evens out.

You can find the Tempe MOU here

    http://www.policepay.net/tempe/contract.pdf

You can download the document and print it off and perhaps use it in your assignment as evidence.

I pay $70 per month for medical, dental and vision for me and my family. It's an HMO which, to me, is really nice.

We aren't charged for the dental, medical, vision, per se, but they did raise the co pay in the last contract. However the dept got a really good pay raise to go with it. Like someone else posted, policepay.net has the pay and benefits for the 200 largest cities. There is also a section for Sheriff's and state troopers.

The only thing I have to pay for is a co-pay on prescriptions. $3 for generic and $8 for brand name stuff.
