Can an officer refuse to give you his badge # for any reason?
sure he could. but if it was me, i would gladly give it out. bring on the complaints!
I do what I can do when I can do it.
We can't, we're obligated to give it, along with our last name ONLY if requested. My first name is always 'officer'...:D
Be advised, I'm mean nasty and tired. I eat concertina wire and piss napalm and I could put a round through a fleas *** at 300 yards. So why don't you hump somebody else's leg mutt-face before I push yours in.

What do you mean "can" he? Do you mean is it lawful, within policy or what?Originally Posted by Topdog
Of course he "Can". The question, if he does refuse, is whether we was within the law or policy.

Our policy dictates that we have to give unit(badge) number but not our name. It really doesn't matter because my last name is right on my nameplate anyways so i just give it. No complaints means you're not doing your job right.

I knew a guy who has Deputy and his last name on his name tag for just that reason.Originally Posted by JD45

I've refused to tell people I've arrested my badge number. Usually shortly after arrest as I'm walking them to the car I hear the "I want your badge number right now!". It's more of an attempt to be a noncompliant loudmouth than it is for them to actually know what my identity is. I figure if they are too lazy to look at the large number smack dab in the center of my badge then I'm too lazy to tell them what it is. Same goes with my last name....read the nameplate. Also, if you get a ticket or a report is written, the badge number will be on each page of it...so if you are telling an officer to give you his badge number as a way to try to intimidate him, it probably wont work. Most departments require officers to give out their name and badge number when it is a reasonable request from an involved person.
Otherwise, my badge number is fair game to anyone who wants it...it's not my ATM pin number so what do I care?
