I am curious how you woud deal with people who can't tell the truth, how do you get to the bottom of the story and make the right call.

Call 'em on it. Prove they are lying. Nit-pick them to death. Nothing works better than the proven truth and a little humiliation.

The key is getting a person to commit to a story, whether its BS or not. Once you've got 'em locked in, start picking away at the details....
What is your major malfunction, numbnuts? Didn't Mommy and Daddy show you enough attention when you were a child?
Yep, they will flip flop until the truth finally falls out.Originally Posted by vadep

And in my personal life I don't waist my time with them.

Ask open ended questions. Don't give them a chance to just say yes or no. Ask them WHY they did that. How did you do that....etc. Small talk em, and ask them again, but in a different way.
Tell them you don't buy their story. Tell them you are out there every day, you know what goes on.
You can always bluff em too. "I am not stupid, I know you did (whatever), why would you do that?"
I"ll never forget an old cops episode. There was a car accident where someone fled the scene because they did meth. The cop went on a search on found the guy under a car. He was heated "CRAWL OUT OF THERE" "DO IT NOW" Then as he cuffed the suspect he kept askin "WHY'D YOU DO THAT?" The suspect just told him everything and admitted he was the one. Good stuff.

Seems like lately I have to really look to find someone that is NOT lying to me....I guess you just get used to it after a while.
One Big Ass Mistake America
When I can sense a lie, I will let them tell me the story. Then I will start picking at it until I find a loose end. It is so fun to watch them sqwirm and invent more lies. Then I call them on it, people who don't lie every second of every day are terribly afraid of being caught in a lie. So I tell them they are lying. When they are, they look at you with that look of idiocy. When they aren't they get pissed before you can get the words out of your mouth. (That last part rarely happens.)
Just watch them while telling their lie. A defense attorney I knew from a few courtroom skirmishes, once told me how many of his clients used to lie to him. We had just finished a motion to suppress hearing that he lost on a delayed rulling, and he had picked on differences in my report from what his client told him. We all have heard "only a fool lies to his lawyer". This attorney told me he would just stare the lying clients down, then tell them he was going to check them with his "lie detector". He would fumble in his desk for a a dramatic few moments while they squirmed, muttering aloud about how much jail time they faced, or how they were going to pay their bills from jail. He would then pull out a huge magnifying glass. He would look thru it at them, say something like your lips are moving - liar, then ask them when they would like to enter their guilty plea (as charged), and start serving their sentence. He didn't care if the client left. He had been embarrassed in Court before, by clients who lied to him.
