    I need some help.

Hello. Earlier today I had an accident. A lady driver backed into me. She refused to show her driver's license and insurance, and made excuses to run away. So I called the police but he refused to help me and said something that offended me... The lady gave me a note written two numbers for the insurance and his name and left. I called the numbers but both of the numbers were not available.

All I got is her license plate number I wrote down when she left. There are only some scratches on my car but I can't afford to fix them and want her to be responsible for that because that was her fault. Can't the police help me on this accident? I think I really need some help from the police but they don't wanna help me... What should I do?

    Thank you.

Hello, thank you for your reply.

Will they really help me? I called the police department when I came home. A police officer answered so I told him the situation, but he told to me call the traffic department or something :( I'm going to call the traffic but I feel like they are annoyed and will not help me.

Where did the accident occur? The street or a parking lot?

When you called the police, did an officer come out? Who said something to offend you and what was said that offended you?

Oldbillplod, thank you for the words. You are a police officer, aren't you?

txinvestigator1, I live in Oklahoma and it happened at the parking. When I came out from the store, the lady was about to run away, so I stopped her. I dialed 911 because the accident just happened. And the police officer who answered the phone refused to come and asked me "how old are you?" I answered "I'm 24." Then he said, "You are 24 and can't you make your own decision?" something like that. It may not be a big deal to you but what he said really offended me. I don't think it was appropriate. Someone hit my car and tried to run away, so I called the police. Wasn't it a right thing...?

I thought the police were supposed to help people. I'm very disappointed. I'm going to call the traffic again but I just hope they won't say anything bad to me. If they don't wanna help me, do I just have to let it go? I just want her to be responsibe for the scratches...

    Thank you.

In most states you can go to the DMV and they will run a vehicle registration for a small fee. You could find the owner that way and file a small claims against her for the damages. Depending on the amount of damage done, and being on private property, it may be considered a non-reportable accident. All the police would really do anyway is have you exchange information, and it's likely an accident report wouldn't even be done. If she indeed left the scene without fulfilling any required legal obligations, depending on what the law requires where you live, it may be a more serious matter. As the others have advised you, contact the police and request a report be done for a hit and run accident if that's what happened. If nobody will help you, then request to speak to a supervisor and ask for the reason for not doing a report.

Since the accident is on private property it probably isn't reportable (as in a police accident report). He still should have assisted in exchanging info, verifying it through DMV. That would help you when you contacted the insurance company.

Since that didn't happen, you need to call the police department back and ask for a supervisor. If he blows you off screw the chain of command and complain to the Chief's office or better yet the mayor/city manager or whatever. When complaints come to the chief from a politician it's usually a rocket down the chain and it gets fixed FAST.

In some cities, non injury accident reports aren't handled by the police at all, on or off private property, we won't respond at all. You might want to find out what their policy is.
