This is me being the cynical me but,

    then....

...and then we talked about the insurance claim....I told him that I inflated it and was caught....wanted to confess, advised not to by a lawyer I hired once the police were involved...went to court, plead guilty and paid a $500 fine. I was not charged criminally, nor do I have a record.
    now.....

My one and only black mark happened about 5 years ago when I was caught for lying to the insurance company regarding a claim I had. You see, I had a vehicle that was causing me problems...I said in general conversation at a party that it would be really nice if my vehicle went missing so I wouldn't have to worry about it. A person there said he'd steal it for me. I said fill you boots...it's all yours. Well, 2 days later it was gone. I never talked to the person after that and I'm 100% sure he took it....my comments were not serious...just complaining chit-chat. I never planned it or really wanted it to happen. Well, it did. I was given a receipt from a car parts place for an item that I didn't own that I claimed was on the vehicle. Well, it turned out the insurance company was already watching that shop and that's why it was investigated. I hired a lawyer when the police raided the shop...wanted to confess..was told not to...told to wait for the insurance company to make the first move...they did...I went to court and pled guilty with an appology....got a $500 fine and no record or charges.
You plead guilty. You have a record.

The car was stolen, and in order to claim any insurance, you would have had to file it as stolen with the PD.

What you are saying is you were caught inflating the claim for parts you never purchased.

You never came clean about who took your car... That YOU are 100% sure he took. So your car is still listed as STOLEN, and you only fessed up to saying you had extra parts on your stolen car. NOT that you know who stole it, and you were involved in a Conspiracy Fraud.

One can only be so Open Minded before all that mind **** spills out, stains and ruins everything.

Very good point. It does seem that he only told the BI about the parts that he did not have. I think theres a big difference between saying you have a few more things in the vehicle and telling someone to steal your car so that you can file a false claim. Why didn't you tell him that you knew who took the car? Why didn't you tell the BI that you gave the guy permission to "steal" your car so that you could file an insurance claim? It seems that you only told the police about something that they had found out (or were going to find out) anyway.

Sorry. Maybe I wasn't clear enough in my typing. I did tell the BI about the guy who I thought took the vehicle. I did tell him I said 'fill your boots'. There never was a PD file open on the 'stolen' vehicle...up here it's dealt with through the insurance company, not the police. I do not have a record because there were no charges. The thing I pled guilty to like I said before was no different than a traffic ticket. Trust me, I've checked out my background so that I would know if I'd have to say I have a criminal record....I don't. The only reason why I brought up this incident is because on the application there is a question that said 'do you know of anything else not mentioned on this application that could cause embarassment to the police department if it was found out about you after the fact'.

Once again, we're off topic so maybe this thread should be closed. I've told my BI everything that has happened in my life...good and bad...100% truthful. I know there's a CVSA up and coming, so there'd be no reason to think I could beat the system by lying now.

All I wanted was advice on bringing the issue up and how I could present the fact that I became a better person as a result of it without coming across as trying to ameliorate the original incident.

    Integrity,

The way I am reading your post, is you want advice on how to explain/soften your criminal past to a background investigator. I think your gonna be hard pressed getting someone from this forum to answer your question without getting static about you being involved in the first place.

As you mentioned before be honest, forthright and sincere, that is all I can say to you.
Eunice: A .22? Oh you've gotta be kidding me. That's like bringing a knife to a gunfight.
Detective Greenly: Yeah, or bringing a really small gun... to a gunfight.

Wait a minute. First, you say that fraud is a civil infraction and not a crime. And now you are saying that the police up there do not deal with stolen vehicles? I'm going to have to talk to some people to confirm this. I have a hard time believing that the insurance companies investigate stolen vehicles, yet police aren't involved.

The ironic part is commiting fraud and then posting to a message forum using the name "Integrity".
