    Grades

After this semester I'll have enough credit hours to apply at the department I want.

How much do math grades figure into a departments evaluation of you? I'll probably have a C or a D in my College Algebra class, but all my other grades for the past three semesters are A's and B's. The D will still give me credit for the class, it just won't transfer to other colleges.

If it came down to me and another applicant who, all else being equal, scored better in the math department, do y'all think the other would be picked?

    Thanks for any info.

They won't nitpick over your grades and compare them to other applicants unless the overall picture was very bad. They will compare your overall character, job history, and oral interview to other candidates when evaluating you. That's what you should be more concerned with.

I believe most depts in my area just make sure you have the minimum amount of credit hours with a "c" average. I don't believe they would pay particular attention to a "d" in math. I had a "d" in college algebra, but out of 136 sem hours, only 2 d's. I just gave them a copy of my diploma. ;)
