    mufflers what kind are legal

well i have a 89 toyota4x4 truck and want to get a glasspack muffler for it.

what i would like to know is how often you guys pull people over for loud exhaust?

the muffler shop says its legal and he said it will give it a nice lil sound and and increase in horse power but it will be louder than stock. i mean i see the lil ricers in thier modified civics all the time and they dont get busted for exhaust

and if it is illegal how much will a ticket be for it and is it a correctable voilation or not?

    thanks

    heres a link to it

Glad you had the forethought to ask. The most importnat thing is what does your state require and or allow as far as exhaust goes ? If you have a safety inspection requirement, ask the mechanic this same question. Beyond that, consider the turbo mufflers. They offer reduced back pressure , more hp ( neither muffler will make much difference that you will notice) but LESS sound. Not no sound just less sound.

At some point you may ( if you aren't already) dating a girl. Parents of teenage girls ( I have TWO) are NOT impressed by cars with a LOUD exhaust.

To get any true noticeable power gain, you might consider a header. If you do this and have the regular glass pak muffler, it will be VERY loud. A header alone is good for about a 5-10 percent power/gas mileage increase unless your foot is planted on the floor all of the time.

I have installed headers, exhaust, intakes systems on a few cars in my time. I only had ONE car with headers and straight through glasspaks and it was LOUD just at idle.

i want it loud but not too loud by the way it is a straight thourgh glasspack but its on a 4cylinder toyota truck.

my question now is what would be the fine?
    is it a correctable voilation?

and am i likely to get stopped say if i let off the gas when i see a cop.

my friend has a 8cyl bronco with no muffler and hes never been stopped.
i want it to sound cool

IMHO , I have YET to hear ANY 4 cylinder car that sounded good with a modified exhaust. Give me a V8 or give me quiet.

    Cars owned in the past...

    1. 1970 Superbee with a 440 hp out of a 1092 Dodge Polara

    2. 1970 Pontiac with a 421 Superduty out of a '66 Bonneville

    3. 1966 Fairlane, 289 , added headers, header mufflers and a 4 barrel carb.

    4. 1972 Nova 307 , added headers, header mufflers and a 4 barrel.

The Fairlane and the Nova were LOUD, very loud.

I am not from CA so I can't answer to the fines that might apply. Stick around, there are CA officers here somewhere.

ENjoy the ride and keep your eyes OPEN. You wil enjoy the view from the front seat a LOT more than the view from the back.

While your on the ride-a-long be sure and let the officer know about your underage drinking. I'm sure he'll be impressed.

modified exhaust is a violation of CVC 27151(a) and is NOT a correctable violation. Any modification you do to a car is NOT correctable, since you did it yourself. It will go on your driving record, not as a point and you'll be required to pay a fine AND fix the violation.

I routinely stop and cite for modified exhaust...
Be advised, I'm mean nasty and tired. I eat concertina wire and piss napalm and I could put a round through a fleas *** at 300 yards. So why don't you hump somebody else's leg mutt-face before I push yours in.

If it's louder than stock, you can get a ticket. Personally, if it drowns out my tunes with my window up, I'll stop you. I tell you what though, it's great to back up speeding tickets. I've had a large number of cases where I was able to add the fact that due to the illegal muffler I could hear the engine open up which was consistant to the acceleration shown by the radar.
