    bicycle cops.....

Do you ride outside your job? I mean is the only time you ride is while on duty or do you also ride and/or race? What kind of riding? Downhill, xc, roadie, BMX/freestyle, etc.

What kinda rigs does your dept provide ya. I've seen the DC cops ride $2500.00 (at least and before all the extra's for PD's) competition bikes (Treks Fuel's if I remember right, can't be sure but they were high end) which I think is WAY overkill for street patrol. I also seen the Charleston, WV PD ride entry level Cannadales (about $500 to $700 before police extras).

I know of only one guy that rides outside of work. He's into racing. Everyone else, it's just a tool. Keep in mind, a lot of depts don't buy bottom tier bikes because the're just not rugged enough. I've broken the frame of one Trek and Two Gary Fishers. (What we had before the Treks) We're testing a Mercedes and a newer Trek bike to replace the current Treks. You'll get about a year patrol use out of a bike before you need to rebuild or replace it. I don't think Cannondales are even in the running. Regardless of the equipment, be it cars, boats or bikes, police work is rough on it.

I don't ride outside of work as of now. I would eventually like to get my own personal mountain bike when I get the money. We ride Raleigh's that are nicely equipped. ;)
