    Have you ever....

Have you ever took anyone out with you to show them what the police work is like? If so, did it feel as though that person was annoying, or was it nice to have someone to talk to while on duty? If I wanted to do this, do I have to go to the department and let them know I want to do this?

Depends on who it is. If it's someone genuinely interested in the job and they are there to learn, I go out of my way to help them out and make them feel comfortable. Some people try to do ride alongs for the wrong reasons, and they do get annoying. They are usually the ones who love to tell you stories about themselves. Every department has different ride along policies, the only way to find out is to call around and ask.

I've taken family and friends before. I've also taken CJ students and on the rare occassion I've had the media "assigned" to me.

If it's someone who I know, then I don't mind. The media and CJ students tend to ask some off the wall questions at times and can be on the annoying side.
Be advised, I'm mean nasty and tired. I eat concertina wire and piss napalm and I could put a round through a fleas *** at 300 yards. So why don't you hump somebody else's leg mutt-face before I push yours in.

I enjoy having someone ride along that is genuinely interested as the others have said. Most people that have rode with me ask many questions that pertain to the job. I talk my dept up most of the time anyway, so I don't mind it. ;)

Most ride-a-longs do it for the entire shift. Some will do half. Whatever the schedule or the other things happenin that day. ;)
