As a rule, OC cannot be trusted 100% of the time. Some people it just plain doesn't work on. Others are too drunk or high to feel it. I haven't heard anything about quality in civilian versions being inferior to LE versions so I think it would be a pretty good bet.

Just buy her pepper spray. just about any manufacturer will do, just get the "Stream" kind vs the "Fog" kind. Stay away from foam formulations. Buy 2 large can. 10oz or better. Use one can up simply LEARNING how to spray it. BTW: Those little keychain dealies are worthless.

Keep in mind, the spray is not to STOP , it's to give you time to escape. Spray and git. Some folks just are not really impressed by pepper spray. On multiple attackers it's worthless. If you want a far better bet on defense, buy a gun and train, train, train.

That said, How about trying a little situational awareness and not walking around alone late at night? If it a "gotta do it" sort of deal, go along with her. It's one of my pet peeves. I can be in the nastiest side of town at one in the morning, with blood spatters on the sidewalk, and here comes some petite little lady (With headphones yet) jogging thru rapist central.

IMO, if she walks into a dangerous situation, pepper spray will only make it worse for her. Get her a good pair of sneakers so she can get the hell out of an area, and get her to recognize dangerous areas and steer clear of them. Just my 2 cents!

How bout remove the danger from the whole situation by taking advantage of the numerous safety programs that colleges have now......escorts to and from buildings... little security taxi's...... walking with a group of people.

I definitely agree with John. On a second note, many campuses have law enforcement and student security. The security is usually used just for that purpose, to walk students to vehicles, etc. ;)

Get her a nextel and have the campus PD's numbers in it, 911, etc. OC spray is good for a last ditch effort. I just got shot with OC today and couldnt tell you if it would work if I were intoxicated. If she is going to carry some spray dont get the stream kind because it's to hard to aim and you end up using allot of spray before hitting your target. Have her attend some womens self defense courses. Stay out of the bad areas and have an escort. Hope this helps. Good luck.

A lot of major police depts have "women strength" or some similar self defense programs. They mostly teach self confidence and how to handle situations by some very simple manuvers and screaming your head off. That would probably work fine in a campus situation.

Don't even think about a gun. Most people aren't really willing to shoot someone and it would get taken away. Self confidence and refusing to be a victim is the best thing she could have going for her. Assaulants can spot potential victims a mile away, but will avoid even a tiny woman who looks like she's determined...
