I'm applying for a sheriff's deputy position, and was wondering how many full-time LEOs have received some type of vaccinations (like Hepatitis A/B or rabies)? I ask because of the (very) slim chance of contacting bodily fluids from the heroin needle of a diseased perp, or blood from an accident victim.
What is your department's standard for getting vaccinations?

Hep vaccinations are mandatory. TB skin pops once yearly.

Don't forget the vaccination that vaccinates you against green monkey desease, extremely painful if you catch that one I can tell you.

I have the Hep series...do a TB test every six months...done the flu shot.
Rabies are not given here unless you have been bit. It is very painful and numerous injections.-In God we trust. All others, put your hands on the car and don't move.

If you work an area (big city, int'l airport, narcotics) where frequent contact is expected from 3rd world travelers, immigrants, or law-breaking foreign clientele, you may wish to check with your County Public Health office for recommended immunizatons. Get a yellow PHS card and ask your supervisor to keep a copy in your record. Most agencies recognize the risks and provide access to immunizations.
Some diseases that we consider obselete in North America and Europe are still a problem elsewhere. The criminals most likley to have closest exposure to LEO's, and being criminals they are not the cleanest people, regardless of their country of origin. We get Hep A for free, I don't know why anyone wouldn't take them up on it. We do TB skin pops every time we get a physical.
