Thanks everyone, and esp. acreature for answering my questions, I've always wondered about the rules and regulations. I drive a lot this sem as I travel to my internship 3 times a week. I go to my house the night before because it is just 15 min away. I drive home often at 1 and 2 in the morning, and the only people you see on the road for the most part are cops, truckers, a few regular motorists, and drunks. It's a lot of work, but I'm hoping it will get me a fellowship for when I go to grad school next year.
What prompted me to ask the initial question, was one night I was traveling west bound on this 4 lane highway, hadn't seen a car in my direction for about 10-15 min. As I am traveling 5 mph over the posted limit a jeep blinks his lights at me. I begin to scan the median that is about 30-40 meters wide, and about a quarter of a mile later I see a crown vic with no lights on.
I was just curious though, is what he did illegal for those jurisdictions who do not have an "interfering with police operations" regulation? This would come into improper headlight usage if he was within 500 meters of me as he was. However he was on the other side of the road, and people always drive with their brights on if no one is traveling in the same direction at this time of night. So, is it illegal to have your brights on if the only car in your close proximity is 40 meters across a grass median.
As I drive, I ask myself a lot of what if's, comes with the territory of wanting to be a cop, just figured I'd throw this one out there.
And in closing, I must say that I don't view the Ask a Cop section as frequently as I did before, however when I do, I like the information much better. I know when an individual asks a question, including myself, it will be answered with real information from real cops, and in most cases with respect.
