    Memorizing codes and signals.

How did you guys memorize your codes and signals? I know there are so many. Any suggestions? I know some cops carry the list with them in case they dont know one. I mean like here a Code 6 is an aircraft crash, how would you remember that if it nevers happens, then one day it does happen, you dont want to yell out "Airplane crash" over the radio.

    here airplane is 4alpha.

Okay I digress, if you and your buddies have nextels. Talk as much as you can in Codes/ten Codes.

I sometimes talk code to my wife, she actually knows alot of it. Of course, I'm usually exhausted when I do it and am not thinking straight.
Drive it, Like you stole it!!

Our dept, is plain English minus a couple of the common place codes.

When I was in SF's academy it was a different story. They have radio codes for EVERYTHING. I usually memorized them a block at a time using flash cards.
Be advised, I'm mean nasty and tired. I eat concertina wire and piss napalm and I could put a round through a fleas *** at 300 yards. So why don't you hump somebody else's leg mutt-face before I push yours in.

It is part of the academy training here......

Do the block study and then listen to the scanner to help support your learning.

The more you use them the more familiar they become. Pretty soon they are second nature. And nothing wrong with blurting out "airplane crash!" We don't have a code for a plane crash so I guess that's what I'd be saying anyways!

Codes are used very rarely around here. Plain english works so much better when working with officers in different agencies. Since all codes are not the same the only thing that is is plain english.

That and it really doesn't matter since most department codes are on a web page some where and it's no secret.

If we really want privacy and some security we just call dispatch on a cell phone or nextel. With our new 800 Mhz system all we need to do is change to an encrypted channel.

Here, they beat it into your head at the Academy. It's simple really. No different than memorizing friend's phone numbers or something similar.
