2 years until I apply

Hello. I have about two years before I apply at the Oakland PD. This is a small summary.

Current
Fluent in English and Spanish
HS diploma
In the Military
Great Shape 6'2" 180lbs
Intermediate Japanese
9mm, 12 gauge shotgun, M-14 Qualified
Reading Barron's Police Exam Book
Have a friend in the Police department where I want to work at.

I'll be starting in 6 months
Criminal Justice Degree
Krav Maga training
Get up to 190-195 lbs.


What do you guys think? What else should I study/do? I want the police department to see what I've done. I want them to look at me and say that I'm the type of person their looking for.

Yes. I've done 5 1/2 years. Will have 8 years with an Honorable discharge. I will be almost 28 years old

You are good to go. All you have to do now is stay on ship when you port in places like Thailand and you'll be a prime candidate. ;)

If you want to stay in the game, stay clean and away from trouble. In may be a party pooper, but you need to look further down the road.

I'm not messing with the girls in Thailand. I went elephant riding and white water rafting. Yes JD45. I will try for Oakland PD. I'm a native of SF but the officers there have always given me attitudes when I asked them questions. I went to oakland and they treated me like family at the station.

Start testing BEFORE you get out. Just look at the academy dates for the testing process to make sure you could get out prior to the academy start.

During the Klinton years, I know they let guys out early to go into a police academy. Those were times of downsizing and I don't see that happening now.

It is common for people to test more than once to get on the dept. too. So, keep that in mind.

Oakland is a TOUGH, TOUGH town to work. If you're thinking of the East Bay, there are lot of good depts there. But if you have your mind set on Oakland, I'm sure not one to discourage you.

Im a very active person. I hate being indoors. Thats why I wont stay in the Navy. I want a good challenge. I'm sure Oakland PD will have them.

I forgot to mention. I've never done drugs. Except when I was given acid at the age of 9. I didn't know what it was. Never been arrested. I have no debt and my credit score is 717.

Looks good,,,but a criminal justice degree? Depends how far up the chain you want to go. The police academy will give you the basics to be a cop. 6 years on the road you will learn the way to be a cop....however,,,most the lieutenants, chiefs and higher ups have a degree in business administration. You see you need to know how to run a district/police department. Criminal justice degree wont help you there. Im not trying to dishearten you but,,,if you look at 2 police officers ,,,lets say both have 6 years on the road...one has a criminal justice degree and one has a business administration degree who would YOU pick to run the behind the scenes stuff and give promotion to?


Food for thought. If you go to www.sheriff.org and look at all the chiefs for about 17 districts,,,look at their education...and think about it. Good luck to you.
