If you use deadly force and it results in the death of the suspect do all departments require to be evaluated by a psychiatrist, or just some? What is involved in this evaluation? If you've had to take one, Do you think it helped?

The Officer is put on administrative (paid) leave. The Investigative Board determines if the Officer needs to be evaluated by the EAP (Employee Assistance Program). We recently had a infant death where a female officer who just adopted a baby had to administer CPR. The infant was already gone but it still freaked her out. She's been to the counseling and says it helps a lot. They basically just talk to you, finding out your likes/ dislikes and if you have any problems.Originally Posted by Bradleyadleo
I never had to go through the program after using deadly force.
Why do you ask?
I know an officer who had to use deadly force on a suspect brandishing a firearm when the weapon was turned on him. The man later died of his wound at the hospital. Haven't seen him around since, and I'm wondering what the process was.Originally Posted by Star
I'm sure he must be on paid leave until the investigation has been completed, that is, as long as the force was justified. If it wasn't justified, he might be working at a Tom Thumb Food Store.Originally Posted by Bradleyadleo

In the PA State Police we have members assistance, a trained peer contact who will talk with you after a shooting or if necessary any incident which may be traumatic. You are not required to talk with them if you don't want to.
PA municipal PD , same deal. Admin assignment and the urged opportunity to talk to a peer or mental health professional.Originally Posted by CTDL92

You are placed on admin. leave until cleared by the shrink. We have a non-dept shrink which is boat loads better since there is no way the dept. can obtain the info from the doctor.
Here, we have coroner's inquests where the officer has an evidentiary hearing in front of a jury. Once he clears this, then he can return to duty if the shrink OKs it along with our PEAP.
Going to damn near every scene like I do, they've sent the peer contact to me I don't know how many times. All of us in the forensic units that were at Flight 93 sifting through the wreckage and photographing the bodies at the morgue had to go to a group meeting and talk about what we saw. Sometimes it's better to let us come to them if needed rather than try to force it down our throats.Originally Posted by mcsap

When I was involved in my shooting, I was put on admiistrative leave for 3 days, could have been longer if I wanted. I was ordered to do this and I was also ordered to see a department psychologist who deemed if I was ready to return to duty or not. These were direct orders to me and are usually given to most officers that are involved in traumatic incidents.
