I am not a mason but I do know that here in TX, most cops were masons. I think it was more of a big deal in years past but I suspect there isn't as much pressure to become one anymore. Heard, for example locally, that in the years past on the Dallas Police Department, if you wanted to get above the rank of patrol officer, you eventually became a mason. I generally heard this was common practice with other local agencies too. Being a mason also helped one along with getting promoted and 'other' special fringe benefits were available too to members. I know a guy on the PD now who joined it primarily for the preferred treatment with the past PD administration.
On a side note, I also heard being a mason in the military was also a plus. Whether or not this is true or not, or widespread, I dunno but this was a rumor I once heard. Maybe someone out there can clarify this?
At any rate, I've come to know it to generally be a secretive society. And, I have no interest in getting involved with it.
