applying to departments out of your home state?

I live in NYC, but I am considering applying to police departments out of New York mainly to increase my job pool. But the thought of moving to a brand new state kind of scares me. For those who became cops in new states, what factors did you consider in applying? Obviously salary would be a factor, but what else? If I am going to move out of NY I would like to live in a nice place so I am looking at books on states that I could possibly see myself living in and I have also been looking at a lot of those "best places to live" lists that a lot of magazines publish.

It's a little easier for me to move because I am 29 and no married nor do I have any kids. For those who did made a move to a new state, how hard was it making new friends? Did you meet anyone outside of the force?

any recommendations on states would be great as well. So far I am interested in Oregon, Wisconsin and possibly Illinois. any advice would be much appreciated

    Thanks

    Kyle

There are some websites that you can enter your data, such as likes and dislikes and it will suggest where to live. If you are moving, find an area you like best. If you like hunting, consider Mich., Wisconsin, etc. If you like salt water fishing, try Fl. or east coast. If you like amish women who cook good, try Indiana.

I moved from Michigan to Indiana. I lived right on the border so it wasn't a major issue, but still alot to get used to. Different laws, cost of living etc. Couple things I would definately do, research www.realtor.com for housing prices, and wherever you are considering, I'd take a vacation for about a week before deciding to move there. This board would also be a great resource.

If you get somewhat interested in a particular town, start reading the local newspaper on line or subscribe to it. There is no better resource of info than a local paper for news, realty info etc.

We got lotsa NYPD guys from the 1975 layoff who came to work at Portland. Most are retiring now. I never heard any say they wish they'd never left NY.
Apparently, I'm supposed to be more angry about what Mitt Romney does with his money than what Barack & Michelle Obama do with mine

You will make friends wherever you end up. Do what your heart says...and not what others tell you. Only you know what will make you happy!
