I was reading a thread where an officer took a cell phone of a detainee and I believe called people with it. I don't want to discuss that thread or put anyone on the defensive. But a question popped up ...
What are the laws/regulations concerning handling property on an detained person? How do seizure laws and other relevant laws apply in this case?

Excess property that the jail won't take, gets booked in at our station as 'excess baggage'.
Anything that is going or has been used in a crime will be booked in as 'evidence'.Be advised, I'm mean nasty and tired. I eat concertina wire and piss napalm and I could put a round through a fleas *** at 300 yards. So why don't you hump somebody else's leg mutt-face before I push yours in.

To expand on that a little, property on a person can also be searched if that person is being arrested. As long as the person is being arrested, no search warrant is needed. For example, if I'm arresting you on a warrant, and you have a big bag of weed in your pocket, I don't need a warrant to get your weed. Same thing in a vehicle, if you are stopped I can search your vehicle without a warrant if you are being arrested. (The term for it is "search subsequent to an arrest")
