    A couple of Q's

First off let me say hello. I am a 19 year old student and is thinking of choosing to be a cop. I will do a few ride-a-longs this summer but I have a few questions.
    1. What is the facial hair policy for most departments. Is it mustache only or are goatees okay?
    2. What are some things I should brush up on before i hit 21?

Please let me know all you can. Thanks.

Your first question will be different depending on the dept. But from what I've seen, I usually don't see depts allowing gouti (sp?). Mustache, yes, but trimmed. No beards.

As far as brushing up before 21, go to college, stay smart, keep a clean driving record, and stay away from drugs. That's about it. Harder than it sounds for someone your age ;)

There are some departments I've seen on the east coast that allow facial hair. I saw an episode of Cops one time too down in Florida where the guys were allowed to donate money to a good cause and get a 'beard permit' for a couple months out of the year. Other than that I think you'd pretty much have to go to Canada.

If you aren't in college, I'd consider starting to take a few courses. Spanish would be a good one depending on what part of the country you're in. You might also try to volunteer at a local PD.

You are or will be known for two things... who you are and who you hang out with. You control both but either one could be your downfall if something bad happens and you are " along for the ride". Choose your friends wisely.

No need to knock on wood. Keeping from having a ticket is easy.

Get a dependable job, do some type of volunteer work, and get some schooling done.

21 is still young and maturity is a MAJOR issue in hiring someone for a position.

Out of 120 in my academy, 2 were 21. Average age was 25.
