    Patroling In Your Home Town?

I heard from a co-Explorer, that my advisor/LEO said that he doesn't think patroling in a town you grew up in, is a good idea. Reasons why, people think you would side more with your family/friends in the town, rather than being equal. Now this is from a co-Explorer not from my advisor/LEO.

I would love to patrol my hometown of where I spent all my 17 years of life in. So my question is...

Would patroling in your home town, make you have a good or bad reputation with citizens?

    Generalized question...

Is patroling in your home town, good or bad thing?

So any opinions would help me a lot.

    Thank You

Why would you NOT want to patrol your own town? You know it right? And as far as your family goes, you're going to be impartial and treat everyone equally right?

It's all about how you take your job. Your home town could be advantageous for you, knowing the area, the people, etc. But it will, eventually, weigh on you the more you learn what POS's some of the people you grew up with became.

I have to agree with acreature. I had the same aspirations of working in the same town I grew up.

Glad I didn't. I ran into so many people I knew just working in the city NEXT to it. Lot's of old classmates that turned to **** etc.

You'll learn your new town/city over time like the back of your hand eventually...
Be advised, I'm mean nasty and tired. I eat concertina wire and piss napalm and I could put a round through a fleas *** at 300 yards. So why don't you hump somebody else's leg mutt-face before I push yours in.

LoL, yes people "yelling" at me got me mad. But I finally figured out  that you guys were right. I guess I was just upset that day, because I haven't seen my friends in a while, but now that school is back, I feel much better.

Personally, if the town is small I wouldn't want to do it. I'd rather work where I'm more anonymous as far as my background, where I live, etc. I definitely wouldn't want some jerk reminiscing about "the old days" as I'm hauling him off to jail.

I wouldn't want to live in my jurisdiction ( and I don't) but I certainly work on the opoposite side of town that I grew up in. 90% of my 46 man dept are local.

I now live about 500 yards from where I was born albeit in a different house. I work just over a mile away from where I live and I havn't had any problems.

I am very glad I don't work where I grew up. I see the frustration it causes the officers who did grow up here. One of them doesn't write tickets to anyone he knows, which makes me sick.

I work in the same city I grew up in about 4 miles from where my parents still live. I've met a few of my 'old friends' professionally most have threatened to see my mum and dad when I'm not around. We had a little chat about the pros & cons of doing such things ;) Nothing ever happened.

That having been said, most of the scrotes where I grew up are far too dumb to find the right bus or tube to get to my DIV'N.

I patrolled the city I grew up in. It was a large city and I never worked the neighborhood I lived in. Once in a while I would drive through, but never was assigned there. I my two years there, I only had contact while wroking with one person I knew from high school. And that was just a traffic stop.

At my second agency, I worked with a lot of guys who grew up in the area. They were always running in to people they knew. For the most part it worked to their advantage. People knew and trusted them. The bad side was they often saw friend and relatives on patrol and in jail. It's sad when your LT comes to the visiting window to visit his son behind glass. Or when you walk into a housing unit and see a friends kid who lived with you for awhile. You just have to do your job and be professional.
That's life in a small town. Everyone here knows someone who knows you. But I still wouldn't give it up for the big city again.

I work 80 miles from my home city.... and it's in a different State.

I have arrested two people I knew as a youngster, one for DWI, and one for PWISD (served 9 months for my charge).

Although a large city with a total area population of over 2 million, I am glad I don't work there.
