I work in my home county but not my home city and have no problems at all. Knowing people has more perks than not knowing anyone. The FTOs that I have had that know "everyone" have it much easier and at times resolve issues faster. When you know a suspect/subject's background you may be able to handle the case more efficiently.

The idea of being a good cop is to learn who the people are in the area you work. Usually after a few months, I knew just about all the bad guys in my district and a good part of the other people. You don't have to grow up there to do that.

I kept a file on all the bad guys I ran into in my briefcase. By taking the time to stop them and just "chat" now and then, you'd be surprised at how much you can find out. What I liked was the info was all one way. I knew a lot about them and they knew nothing about me personally, only how I worked.
Apparently, I'm supposed to be more angry about what Mitt Romney does with his money than what Barack & Michelle Obama do with mine

I patrol in my hometown. Heck, I patrol in the area where I grew up(Fourth District - All of Uptown DC). I regularly run across people when I am in my old neighborhood. And those people get NO special exceptions just because they know me on a first-name basis.

Just the other day, we got a call regarding numerous disorderlies, subjects hanging out on the corner drinking and being noisy. When I got on the scene, I recognized ALL of them as people that I knew from the old neighborhood. They thought they would get a break because they knew me.

    NOPE.

I ran all their names, then ended up giving them citations for Possession of an Open Container of Alcohol. They were mad no doubt. But I did my job just as any other officer other than myself would've done.
