Off duty weapon laws? Help...

Hey Im new here, Just reading up on this site is fantastic. ANYWAY, Had a few questions about when your off duty what are the laws of carrying concealed firearms? Do they have to be issued firearms only or can they be your own?

Can certain places deny you entry because your armed? Such as night clubs or bars or sporting events or disneyland or somthing?

Im curious to know this because Ive always wondered how many armed off duty police are around me at one given point?

Also is it mandatory to carry when off duty? Or is it just personal preference?

You can carry any legal weapon off duty, the only restriction will be placed upon you by your department policy. I personally carry my own off duty.

Private events can deny you entry because your armed, if they chose to do so, but the majority won't because they like the idea of armed law enforcement. They also don't want any bad publicity with the Police. Some places like US Courthouses won't even let armed, uniformed officers carry.

As to how many armed off duty officers are around you, that would depend on where you are I guess, and who you hang out with. Most don't advertise, for obvious reasons. Off duty Officers usually don't want to get involved in anything, except for being a witness, unless is absolutely necessary. We like our off time too

Most places it's a preference to carry off duty. I do know some rural areas around here where it's mandatory. It again would depend on your dept policy.

I should probably clarify on that US Courthouse deal. I haven't been able to figure that one out. Sometimes they let us carry, other times we lock them up. I also know at one time they wanted assistance from the local Sheriffs Dept but didn't want their uniformed officers to be armed. That didn't go over too well, luckily the event was called off due to a plea.

Hey thanks man. I just passed my written exam for the CHP.. My QAP (the big interview) is on Nov 11th. Really nervous I dont wanna mess up. Ive been wanting to do this for quite some time now. Thanks again!

Good luck to you. Don't worry about messing up. Do your best and if it wasn't meant to be, no sweat. You may want to post a message or do a search in the hiring/background threads to see if you can get any inside tips as to what you might excpect with the CHP interview. You never know what you might find.

THanks... I also had questions about the different firearms that different dept. use... Like why does CHP us S&W 40. and most police use 9mm glock?

Actually I see more agencies in CA being issued either the Baretta 9 or .40, not Glock.

We issue the 9, but I prefer the .40

But in answer to your question, my guess it would all come down to money and what type of deal the agency was able to strike with a paticular vendor.

BTW, we issue the 9 instead of the .40 because some of our officers can't shoot worth a **** and they were afraid if they can't shoot well with a 9 then how terrible would they do with a .40. Lame *** excuse if you ask me...train them better.

Most depts in my area carry the .40 cal glock (not 9mm). ;)

It will vary from state to state. Law in TN states that officers can carry just about anywhere. Of course quite a bit has changed now that Bush signed in the new law to carry nationwide. We can't carry where alcohol is served, in schools (unless allowed by the principal), and most federal buildings. ;)

LEO's in Virginia can carry anywhere in the state (except federal buildings) and aren't restricted by private property rights. We may also carry into bars but may not drink while carrying.

Ditto to what GoDirectly said. Also, the new law only changes what you may do in states other than your own. The old rules still apply as far as what your state allows you to do.

We carry off duty but again, it depends on what your department's policy is. Most deputies carry a sig .40 on duty and their own weapons of choice off duty. If I'm not in a good mood, I mount a Mag 58 on my Explorer. j/k :D
