I told people that I collected garbage for the city.
NO, I simply said that I was a cop.

Remember those who died, remember those who killed them.
The only place I don't tell people is at the bar. Those f-ers don't need to know. It causes too many problems. I won't even tell girls...well okay, I will SOMETIMES. ;) Hey, they seem to like it.
UNLESS they are hippie liberal KERRY SUPPORTERS...I met one the other night, she asked what I did and I told her, and she stopped talking to me lol.
But to everyone else, my friends (other LEOs) usually lie and say something obscure.
I don't have a problem telling someone what I do. Like 121..if I'm at a bar I'm not going to advertise it but other than that, I can't see it really mattering all that much.

Good question. I just tell a lot of people I work for the city. Most don't ask any further.

I tell people I work in a bank..
Nice part about it its the total truth
Sorry to hijack but I have to tell a funny story here.
I was at Wal-Mart with another cop buddy last year, and we were trying to get some help from this one employee, who obviously needed to lay off the reefer. He recognized my friend and asked "aren't you a cop?" He told him no, he worked at a local grocery store. This kid also happened to work part time in the same grocery store, but believed him anyway. He said "oh, good" then proceeded to tell us how much he hated the F'ing pigs etc.
We found the kid's manager and told him how offended we were by the comments his employee had made towards law enforcement. The manager told us he was glad we talked to him about it because they had been looking for a reason to fire him. I haven't seen him working there since.

It's not like being an oprative for the CIA, you can tell people what you do.
How come your house has wheels and your car doesn't?
And unless they're one of your slow neighbors, they might get a clue when they see the take-home car in the driveway and you in a uniform. ;)Originally Posted by corporal716

I am in Law Enforcement. My friends already know.

I do the same. Most people know different because I have a patrol car in front of my house whenever I am not working. We just got a new Chief that likes us to drive our patrol cars off-duty. So it is a now brainer for most.Originally Posted by tpd_six

Say "I if tell you then I would have to kill you".
I just play it by the situation. If I am in a very public place, and some one asks me my place of employment, I give them a business card, to look at not keep, versus, blurting out my info.
If I am anywhere that I have at least one friend or family member, everyone knows anyway.
If I am at the bar, then everyone knows anyway, we are loudest bunch of rascals there.
If and when you start telling people you are a cop, make sure they know the ground rules if you are out in public with them, e.g. eating dinner with friends. If something goes south, make sure they know not to jump up and say "Your a cop, do something." That could very well ruin your day.
You know the difference between a job and a duty? A job you can refuse to do because it's dangerous; a duty you must do even if it is dangerous.
