got a ticket and didnt have insurance read

ok heres the deal deer ran out on the road i swirved and hit a tree, cop comes gives me a ticket(failure to control) and asks for insurance, now at the time i thought i had it(its in my moms name n all) he said np and to send a valid copy of my insurance in when i send in the cash for the ticket BUT when i get home and tell my mom she says she let the insurance run out last month WTF! now i was wondering if i get insurance RIGHT NOW if ill still lose my lisence for 90 days? and no i havent driven since i found out i didnt have insurance BUT im still held responsible for all of it so i need to know what todo by you cops.... p.s. im 18 and live in ohio

No matter what you were operating a uninsured vehicle. In SC you would not be held responsible if u really didnt know. On the flip side your mom is accountable and would be charged with allowing the operation of an uninsured vehicle.

Did he charge you with having no insurance? If so, you're probably out of luck. Most states say the driver is responsible to make sure the vehicle they are driving is insured. If he only wrote you for the other offense, you probably aren't being charged, although the court might want to see your insurance.

Don't drive the car anymore until it is insured, get the insurance reinstated ASAP, and take your proof to court with you. If you explain to the judge what happened and show that you at least cared enough to go right out and get the insurance, he might be more lenient with you. I don't know how the Ohio driver's license suspension works.

Fortunately the only damage here it sounds like was to the deer and your car. It could have been a lot worse if someone had been injured or serious damage was done to someone else's property. This is exactly why there are insurance laws.

oh i missed the deer and no he didnt charge me w/ no insurance BUT told me to call his HQ and tell them my insurance info when i got it AND send a copy w/ my ticket payment...

If you weren't charged, you're probably really lucky. Just get the insurance, and give him the information he needs, it's probably just needed to complete the accident report. Since there was no injury or other damage, the chances of them wanting to go back and charge your mom are pretty slim, I'd say.

No offense but your mom obviously knew there wasnt insurance on the car and let you continue driving it without it. What if you were arrested for it at the time of the accident. Then your mom wouldve let you get in trouble and hung you out to dry.

thats real world advice. Its up to that particular officer. There is no universal book that tells us every what if situation for every cop in the world. If it helps I would charge your ungratefull ***.
