What is it like being a rookie specificly in the Nypd but would also like to know what it was like for you guys wherever you are?

I was very well taken care of. Probably because my grandfather was Chief of Police.
Later on, down the line with different departments and working my way from Miami to North Florida, I got harrassed in every which way. Probably because of being a female. You have to focus on your goals and get there whatever way you can, honestly.
My advise would be to be the best you can be and don't let anything get in your way. Do everything honestly and with every bit of strength you have. If you want it bad enough, no matter what it is, you'll get it.
Rookies start at the bottom, get some dirty jobs dumped on, learn the hard way, but this is the BEST way to learn and leave "rookiehood" behind.

I was treated how you would expect to be treated when you are new in any job.
Expected the make the tea and deal with all the crap jobs, this continued until I had gained everyones respect and someone with less service than me came along.
A snout has told me he's got a set of nostrils, so go and get a W so we can spin his drum to see if he's got any monkey gear - The Sweeney.
My first night was the most surprising...I thought I'd get bashed and the normal FNG kinda thing. Especially since I was the first guy from my academy to hit the streets. At roll call I figured the beatings would begin...but all I got was a lot of "Thank god you're here, we are so short out there". Everyone seemed happy to have some new cops on the streets, even if we didn't know what in the hell we were doing.
Of course, later on I did catch flak for many of the dumb things I did, and still am doing...My first fto discovered that I didn't have the ability to use the computer and stop at stoplights at the same time....kept her alert....

LOL, expected to make the tea. God, that brings back some memories. My mom is from London, so I've had my fair share of hot tea. Folks in the US don't drink it hot like you guys do. You got me thinkin about it now. Might as well go fix some.Originally Posted by Oldbillplod

The bad part is that if you ever change departments, you are the rookie again. Even if you have more experience than the guys that are calling you a rookie.

Hand in Hand!

What about those that have to do both?

For me being a rookie was not bad. I had been an explorer for years and personally knew everyone I worked with. The only thing defferent was the badge and I was carrying and gun.
How come your house has wheels and your car doesn't?
