For my dept. SWAT is a position just like any other that you can apply for in the dept. Of course there are some special physical testing requirements that you wouldn't have to fulfill if you were say....applying to be a car burglary detective...but otherwise it's just another job. Salary is the same, although there are some special uniform allowances. Our swat team serves warrants or assists other special units, like the Parolee Intervention Team when they aren't doing SWAT call-outs. They also train alot, shoot alot, run alot...

Hope that helped, because I personally couldn't get Sbrads "clicky" to work.

Please do a search. This has been covered adnosium.

Become an officer/agent first. THe pay, generally, is the same as any other position in the department/agency. In some departments you may get more OT, depending on how they do their benifits and how busy the team.

FOr us, military may help a little, with our national team in particular. It's useful more for the minor details than anything big. The inspections, marching, and experience with headgames that one gets in military training helps. FOr our regional SRT, military provides no additional benifit over the actual training you may get.

What you do when you ar not on a mission/training varies on several things. Is it a full time team? If so, it's usually training and operations... period. If not, many departments/agencies have ou doing your "normal" job and you are on call all the time. Training is often 16 hours a month (NTOA standards).
