Become an officer/agent first. THe pay, generally, is the same as any other position in the department/agency. In some departments you may get more OT, depending on how they do their benifits and how busy the team.
FOr us, military may help a little, with our national team in particular. It's useful more for the minor details than anything big. The inspections, marching, and experience with headgames that one gets in military training helps.
FOr our regional SRT, military provides no additional benifit over the actual training you may get.
What you do when you ar not on a mission/training varies on several things. Is it a full time team? If so, it's usually training and operations... period. If not, many departments/agencies have ou doing your "normal" job and you are on call all the time. Training is often 16 hours a month (NTOA standards).
