I'm applying for an internship at a local police department in their IT section, and I'd like to be able to provide some examples of things I could contribute to the department. I've been on several ridealongs to get an idea of their systems, but I'd like some additional suggestions as to what (as if you were in the dept I'm working for) you'd like to see available to you. This could range from programs available on the in-car computer to digital video/audio recording to providing maps/cheatsheets/etc via in-car / station computers.

Depends on what they already have, pretty much any system can be improved upon. IMHO as busy as my dispatchers are sometimes, anything that increases the amount of info available to me in my vehicle without having to use up airtime is very valuable. Most cops are "do-it yourselfers", and like things to be self-explanatory.

To pull up drivers license photos from my states DMV via my mdc. I can do this at the station but not in the cruiser. We run 1.8 gig P4 Dell Laptops. My desk computer at HQ is an older PIII.

database. most PD peeps have no clue what you can do in excel or access. just set up a few databases and they'll worship you.
