    Business and Crim.

I am currently taking OPOTA courses. After I am finished with these courses I plan to go back to school and finish my associates degree in crim.. I am thinking about maybe getting also my associates degree in business. Say I had an associates in crim. and business, could it help me out or would the business not help at all? Any current officers have any say on this? Would it be pointless to get my degree in business or could it maybe look good on my resume or app.? Any comments?

Any degree should help you out, depending on where you apply they will have different requirements. I know a lot of agencies I've seen lately actually look for applicants who have a degree other than CJ now. Nothing against CJ, it's just kind of what everybody who wants to be a cop goes and gets.

i was told by some LEOs that cj degree wasn't worth what it used to be. I know one of my buddies took a civil service exam for a dept. and got on with a four year business degree. Thats it, just a business. Of course he had to go through the academy. Sounded strange to me. Maybe he was right.

I don't believe it is as much as it used to be either. A four year degree is nice to have no matter what the major, especially for advancement, but when you look at the FBI hiring page you will not see CJ as one of the degrees they are interested in. Foreign language, business, economics, etc. ;)

So say I was up against a guy who had a four year degree in CJ and there was me with a associates in CJ and an associates in Business, who would get picked or what would be your personal opinion as a LEO who controlled the hiring process. Would ther chief say "well this guy has only a associates degree in CJ so he going in the no hire pile"? What would be the better way to steer between the two?

Well that is kind of a tough scenario to answer. Lots of other things matter besides your degree. But all things being equal, the bachelor's will probably outweigh the 2 associates. Mainly because a BA/BS is higher level of study than an AA. Just like a Masters is a higher level than a Bachelors.
