    Yet another CCW question

    A little different pheraps...

I wouldnt do it myself but my co-worker apparently has no qualms about it.

Since we live in the same general area we usually carpool, sometimes when its his turn to drive he likes to make a couple stops to pay his bills(cellphone, electric, phone..etc) As we all have CCW's, my question is this, he takes his gun off and puts it in the glove compartment then goes inside and leaves the gun in the glove compartment...besides the huge safety concerns this rises, i was wondering if this was indeed illegal.

I often have chastied him for this and i get one of those "huh" looks.

I've taken quite a few stolen gun reports from people who have done that very thing. I think the worst was from a guy was was driving a soft top Jeep Wrangler...... no, the very worse was a guy who put his heater into his jacket pocket when he went to a bar..... he took the jacket off an put it on the stool while he played darts. Some smart butt observed this, boosted the pistol, and put it in the bathroom trash can. If you get a CC permit you have to be responsible.

I put mine in the glove box sometimes when I'm driving depending on what I'm wearing. It can be impossible to draw a gun while sitting in the car...however, seems kind of silly to leave it in the glovebox while going inside...why not just leave it at home? You may run into some legal issues depending on who else is in the car. For example, if you happen to have some parolee/felon friends they could get a quick trip to prison. Kids riding in the car...etc....
One other thing, remember to let an officer know if you get stopped that you have a gun in the glovebox BEFORE you open it. Things get unfriendly if they see it before you tell them...unless you are one of those thrill seekers who likes looking at the business end of a duty weapon.

Texas Law makes it illegal for a person to have a handgun "on or about his person", unless the person has a CHL. (not including LEO and other allowances) If your buddy has a CHL, but leaves the gun "about the person" of a non-CHL holder, then the non-CHL holder is subject to arrest.

Texas courts have held that "about your Person" includes any area of the vehicle within your immediate access.

I leave mine in an exposed "pocket" , but covered with a wash cloth.

Why you might ask, if you need it while your driving or at a light its right there. When I get to where I'm going I put it back in my iwb on my hip.

This will inevitably happen. I honestly don't see an issue with it. If you have to go into a school, post office, airport, etc where your CCW is not valid, I would rather risk my gun being stolen than charges that can come if I decide to carry it in one of the above mentioned places. I don't look at this as irresponsible.

When my fiance decides to drive my vehicle or is going to run some errands, I will leave my weapon at home since she does not have a CCW permit.

If the gun is stolen, yes it can end up in the wrong hands, but I would think a good majority of stolen gun reports come from home burglaries just the same.

I would only suggest you leave your weapon in the vehicle if you are going to go in somewhere where it is prohibited. The only exception being is leaving with or around a person without a CCW or keeping it in the vehicle when you plan on a night of drinking.

    My two cents anyway. ;)

Correct me if I am wrong, but leaving the gun in a car with someone else who has a CCW doesn't mean squat, because the permit only covers weapons on your license, not someone else! So, if YOUR gun is in a car with me and YOU are not there, I am "busted"!!

Not in Texas. Texas issues CHL's with "NSA" or "SA" as the type of weapon. NSA is non semi auto, and SA is Semi Auto.

NSA cannot carry a semi-auto, but can carry ANY revolver or other non semi-auto

    SA can carry anything.

The best suggestion for when you may need to leave your CCW is to get a small lock box and put in in the car. A small cable lock or mount it in the trunk is not a bad idea. I have a truck and could mount it under the back seat or any place there is enough space and it's out of the way.

That way if you need to go into a place that has a sign that says no firearms you have a relativly safe location to store the firearm.

I'm not sure about CA but in KY your CCW permit covers any legal firearm you choose to carry (and are qualified with).
