I got the best of both worlds. I got the hoods, they are in the county areas because no city will annex them. And, I got the rural areas. Some days I'm a country boy, others I'm Deputy Bad ***.

I also like to poach in the neighboring cities. They are always saying how the drugs and other related crimes are increasing. So, I jump in cross the city line and show'em how it's done ;)

Reminder in Florida: City cops can only work in their jurisdiction, even though there is mutual aid. Deputies can work any where in the county. State Troopers, as well as, DOT, and FDLE (Florida Dept. of Law Enforcement) can work any where in the state.

Deputies in Florida do make a little less $. But, we have more opportunities for training and advancement.

Yes, I ment sef-improvement. Mostly the oppertunity to learn from seeing more sides of the criminal justice system on a daily bases. Like working in the court system around judges and DA's. I'm most definitely not trying to say Sheriff's Deputies are better than City cops.

most cities have have some sort of formal process to terminate employees.
That would suck. They can not do that here. Deputies in California have civil service protection.

After much consideration I took the city cop gig. The deputies around here tend to immediately get stuck in the jail for a couple of years after being sworn. Then there is all that fun civil standby, serving restraining orders, and working as bailiffs...No thanks. Of course, as others have said being a city cop has it's drawbacks too...like arresting the same smelly homeless people every single day for a week...but that's city life I guess. Besides, I'm trying to set a record of how many times a single person can pee in the back of my patrol car.
