    I'm a former SWAT Sniper...

My department does not allow detectives to remain on SWAT, so when I was promoted I was forced to "retire".
What is your major malfunction, numbnuts? Didn't Mommy and Daddy show you enough attention when you were a child?

What rifles, caliber, and optics do you guys prefer? (I happen to like the Remington 700 PSS in 308 win.) Also, how did you become one?

Remington 40x (tweaked out 700P for allpractical purposes) in .308 with Leupold 3.5-14, firing 168gr Fed Gold Medal Match or 165gr Fed Tactical (bonded) rounds.

We also have NightForce scopes on several guns. They are sweet!

...I was selected as a marksman/observer by my SOG team commander.

COOL!! I like those NXS scopes..... I have a PSS(in 308 win.) w/a NXS 5.5-22 by 56. I haven't sighted it in yet because I'm having a little trouble getting the scope in the right possition (getting the crosshairs to go straight up and down and not at a slant). Could you give me some tips on how to get it straight? I want to get into the long range tactical shooting sport. What ammo would you recommend for like 600 to 1000yds?

First, if you want to go out past 800yrds, you may want to consider another caliber (.300 winMag, etc.). Why do you have a 22 power scope on a .308? THat is way over-kill... that even dwarfs the scopes on our .50s!

I don't think its too much. I've heard of guys using .308 at 1000 yds. and I kinda like having that extra power. :D I'm having a little trouble getting it mounted correctly. I need some pointers. The .300 win mag is very nice and has a flatter trajectory,BUT it can be very expensive and wouldn't be good for a beginer like me (too much recoil).

I routinely shoot out to 800yrds. Headshots at 600 are not a big deal. However, your field of view sucks with a 22 power if you want to stare at the pores on someone's nose, more power to you.

I am just speaking in a professional sense. I don't know what came over me. Remember that many (if not most, to include the military) use 10x.

I don't understand why you would have so much difficult mounting the scope. First (ignoring the reticals position) establish the right position of the scope for your proper eye relief. Get down on the gun and find what works best for you. Tighten the mount only slightly, to keep the scope from moving freely.

Now, with the mount still pretty loose, you should be able to rotate the scope with a little resistance to allign the reticles. Once satisfied, tighten it up.

DO you know how to bore site?

Is your scope mildot? I highly reccommend a mil dot scope to anyone even a little serious about shooting.

Another sniper checking in. My dept is in the process of switching to Remington 700 based .308's with Leupold scopes. Our current rifles are Rugers and the suck.

My personal rifle is a Robar SR-90 (700 action) .308 topped with a Leupold Vari-X III 8.5x25x50mm and Badger rings and mounts.

Switch is right on the money,as usual. The .308 is a great performer out to 800 yards, but after that gets kinda squirrelly. Yeah, you can shoot 1000 yards with it but you're pretty much lobbing it in like artillery. If I had the money to build a 1K plus rifle,I'd want a .338 Lapua.

And for the reticle issue I prefer a duplex. I guess its all in what your comfortable with and a mil dot ain't it for me. I was taught all the formulas for my come ups and all,and I use my turrets to their fullest. The thing I was never comfortable with was the mil dot system felt like I was using "Kentucky windage" with the holdovers and all. I like knowing that I can look and say, that target is X number of yards away and I need X number of clicks to get me there. Then, settle my crosshairs dead center and boom. I don't have to worry if the dot I'm on is the right one,or if the dot is the right size for my calculations, etc. Cause yes, there are different mils out there and it will screw you up. In my business, and Switch will agree, the Keep It Simple Stupid method is the best one. So find out which one is easier for you and stick to it.
Lead me not into temptation.......someone talks me into enough sh!t as it is. .

Ghost, the mildot is most useful for range estimation. Holdovers are ok when you are in a bind and don't have time to use your turrets. However, the mildots excel when doing rnage cards and range estimation. We all havelaser rangefinders, but batteries die or some environments are not condusive to accuracy with the lasers. FOr those times, you have to use the ol' fashion mildot. My last advance school has is hitting 8" steel plates at unknown distances. We had to mil them out ACCURATELY, adjust your scope and make the shot. The longest one we had was just shy of 600 yards. At that range with 8", you need to be able to mil really well.

Yes, the smaller FOV is a drawback of the more power. :(
I have been using that technique to mount my scope. When I think I have it right I'll tighten the rings, look at it again and the reticle will still be canted. Is there a tool I can use to allign it correctly? I would like to have it perfect...maybe I'm aiming too high. I would like to bore site it for 200yds. How do I do that? No, the reticle isn't mildot. It's the NP-R2 reticle. I was told that the NP-R2 was a little more simple than the mildot.

    RUGERS!?!?! YUK!!! ;)
    Good to have ya aboard.
How's the FOV with your Vari-X III? Now, about the .308.......
I read an article in the Jan./Feb. 2004 issue of Rifle Shooter. They took a Remington 700 VLS(.308), with a prototype springfield 6-20x56 tactical scope and used black hills 175 gr. match grade ammunition. The author fired a three shot group of 5 3/4" at 1000 yds.
I don't know much about the .338. Is that a magnum?
