    Radar question...

    Hello real police again,

Please let me say that the question I am about to ask is for my information. I am not trying to get out of a ticket or anything like that. When I refer to a Friend I am not refering to myself which alot of people seem to do on these forums. Here we go...

I have a friend who likes to drive fast, I mean really fast on the local highways. He has been ticketed before for reckless driving and I tell him every chance that I get that I do not approve at all over his actions on the highway. The main reason that I still am friends with him was because we race bikes together on the weekends, well assuming that is important.

Last week my friend was driving over 130 MPH in his RED 3 seried BMW on a local highway that is quite deserted all the time. I have driven this way and I can say most drivers do 100+ on this road all the time. A CHP officer was sitting on the sholder in a marked but with no lightbar crown vic. My friend said that he saw the car about 200 feet before he passed him. I proceded to slam the brakes but managed to aonly slow down to approximatly 95 MPH before passing the CHP officer. The trooper got on the gas and pulled him over a short time later. He was given a speeding ticket but because he was not over 100 and not changing lanes, or commiting other infractions he did not get reckless driving.

I was looking at another CHP car last night and it seemed to have radar in the front and the back. Is that typical on police cars with radar? Can they really get your speed as they approach you from behind? I went to talk to the trooper and he got mad because I was looking at his car. I tried to ask him about the radar and he did not answer.

How do you tell which car is really driving that fast from behind? Do most officers only use radar in the front? I think the troopers play fair in these respects and the tactic is not unfair by any means. I just wanted to get an idea of how they worked.

    Thanks Again...

Oh ya I told my friend that if I ever found out he was driving that way again things might happen to our friendship.

Yes... there are a few models that have the same lane capability. I have an Kustom Golden Eagle

It has front and rear moving/stationary and same lane. Also has Fastest Vehicle Mode, and Vascar Timers.

Yep it's moving mode radar with a front and rear antanne (sp?).

You don't need to be going over 100MPH for reckless driving. All I need to do is prove this:

23103. (a) Any person who drives any vehicle upon a highway in
willful or wanton disregard for the safety of persons or property is
    guilty of reckless driving
If I can articulate in a court of law that your driving constituted that...guilty of reckless.

If CHP got your "friend" on radar at over 100MPH he probably got cited for 22348(b) which is a nice 2 points on his driving record.

Tell your friend, if he is really your friend that there are those of us that if we see him going 130+MPH on the freeway, he will go to jail for reckless. I don't mean a cite out either. I'll impound his car for 30 days, and book him in County and let him get out after about 4 hours in jail.
Be advised, I'm mean nasty and tired. I eat concertina wire and piss napalm and I could put a round through a fleas *** at 300 yards. So why don't you hump somebody else's leg mutt-face before I push yours in.

You might want to share this with your friend. I did arrest someone for reckless driving. The DA was more than happy to prosecute. He was going 140+ in a 65.

He thought he would try and contest it because there weren't many cars around and so forth. He opted for a jury trial and off to court we went. Before court started the judge told him what he thought of him right in open court..:D Then he got offered a plea of 2 days in the County Jail. At first the guy didn't want to take it. So the judge told him that he could have his jury trial. But....if he was found guilty the judge would impose the maximum penalty which was 7 days in the County Jail...:D

    He took the plea.....

And exactly how would a trooper not "play fair???? It's about enforcing the law, not playing some sort of game. Yes, he can radar you from the front, back, moving, stationary, same or opposite direction. It's not rocket science to pick out a car doing 100+ mph.

All of our radars have antennas out of the front and back and can clock vehicles either stationary or moving. It has been like this for a long time. Over 100 mph around me will land you an arrest for reckless. Yes, we can cite on a ticket, but I would do the harsher punishment and tow the vehicle. 100+ is stupid unless you have a number on your door and are driving around a circle.

Reckless Driving all the way. I would even take the time to call this idiot's insurance company and make SURE they understand exactly what kind of driver they insure.

I try and not be a "troll" (I guess that I will say it). I am not trying to get people to respong. I some time have trouble between first and third person writing, which is why I always have to proof read my posts. If I said I, I must have been thinking in first instead of talking for him. I warned my friend today that he was lucky that he did not go to jail, if I was the cop I would have thrown him in jail. I do not think that the CHP officer was being unfair at all. If I (Now talking about me) was caught doing anything over 100 I would expect to get thrown in jail, but of course I would not jepordize my bid at LEO over driving that fast. I am thinking about anomously calling the insurance company on him. I am going to assume that his insurance will be going up huge.

I try and preference contriversial posts so I try and not be a trool. I thinking hearing what you say from "real police" might make him understand what could have happened. I said I did not think the tactic was unfair, I am actually glad he got caught. Some time in jail would be good for him at this point. But when I talk to his parents and tell them waht really happened they may do something worse. The problem with 21 year olds is they can get these fast cars then they go and be reckless behind the wheel.

Let me say again I would never go that fast on the public highway. Maybe I should say again that when I was underage my friend died in a street racing accident. I learned early not to play on the street. Why do you think I say "take it to the track".

As to the original question can the rear radar only pick up the car directly behind or can it sweep around like a typical hand held radar?

Sorry if you view this post as contriversial. I hope you do not think I am a trool. BTW the last 2 posts, this and the can you be held in jail for more than a couple of hours. I deal with a lot of students everyday and since I am the "race car driver" an dpeople assume I know everything. Of course I do not so I ask here.

Thanks for all who gave construtive responses. Let me say again I would also have wnated reckless driving. Fast speeds are for the tracks and not the street.

We use Decatur Genesis 2 and I love it. It has antennas in both teh front and the back. I can get the speed of cars coming at me or past me in the opposite lane, I can get the speed of the car in front of me or behind me in the same lane, or I can run stationary radar.
