    New POST Student

Well, semester after next at our community college im signing up for the POST class. Im going to get my AS in business before i start the POST. I should have my degree in another semester or so. Im 19 now (as of sunday the 3rd). So far my basic questions are this:

    1. For those of you that have taken POST, how long does it take to complete?
    2. Will a business degree look good on a LEO application? Ive been told i can get a recommendation from a family friend (hes a Sherrif for our county, where I will be applying).
    3. My eyes are starting to go bad..not horribly but i could stand to get contact lenses. Now im adimant about not getting contacts, hell i havent even admitted to my parents yet that i need to see an optomitrist. But assuming i either get corrective surgery or contacts, is that going to take me out of the running for a LEO position?

Ive got a clean record, dont smoke, dont drink, never tried and drugs, im a 4.0 student and im in the honors society/presidents list at my college. My employer used to teach some of the POST classes and says I will benefit alot from them. Anyways, any info I can get would be GREATLY appreciated. THANKS A MILLION!

(my sister just entered the CHP training course at 24, im hoping to get several years of LE experience at the TCSD (tulare county sherrifs department) and then move to the CHP if a spot opens). It depends on the lenght of your academy/college. Mine was through SFPD and was 7 months long. Nowadays, any degree helps in applying not neccessarily just a business one.

I do remember CHP being pretty stringent on eyesight. You might be able to ask your sister to confirm/deny that.

Your background sounds good so if you manage to get a POST before the age of 21 along with a degree, there will be plenty of depts that would be willing to pick you up. Keep in mind though, just because you obtain a POST some agencies will still put you through an academy. Also, you might have to maintain it as well if you get it way before the age of 21 or get hired.

    Good Luck!

Well my sister has contacts and is doin the CHP thing alright. Ill tell my mom tonight, and see if we cant make me an appointment with the eye doc. Ill have my business degree in another 2 semesters, possibly next semester, and i will start POST next semester (night time, not full time). I would still like to be put though a departments academy, i think it will help to become a better officer. Any other tips are greatly welcomed.

I had LASIK to correct my vision before getting hired. Best money I've ever spent.

How much did the LASIK Cost? I was looking into that, but being only 19 my parents dont think its practical (id rather do it sooner than later). Any info on your LASIK experience? Any other vision problems after the fact?

I had LASIK done when it was brand new so that was about 7 years ago? At that time it was something around 2K for both eyes. Dr. Kawesch from San Jose did my eyes. He trains other surgeons on LASIK so I was pretty confident with him.

It was the best money I ever spent. The results are instant when they put the flap of your eye back in place. It takes a bit for your eyes to heal, especially for night vision. My vision is pretty damn good, I was thinking about a 'touchup' to get my vision to 20/20 in my left and 20/15 in my (right) dominant eye.
