Not exactly the best questions, but I'm curious just the same...
In 2003, the Philadelphia Police Dept amended their "No Beard Policy" by allowing officers to grow facial hair for religious (mainly Muslims) or medical reasons (mainly a skin condition called pseudofolliculitis barbae, which is common among African-Americans).
I know that many of the officers in the PPD have not been happy about this and have complained about it numerous times They claim that it makes the officers look unprofessional. On top of that, the officers have voiced concerns that they thought the public might not think those sporting beards were actual officers because of the policy they've always had in place.
I've read that NYPD says "No beards unless medical or undercover". I've also read that LAPD says "No beards for religious reasons". I'm curious what your department say? Has your department had to amend any policies for religious or medical reasons? Do you feel that religion belongs at work or do you see it as a deterrent? Do you think they (the beards) look unprofessional?

Remember that we do not wear uniforms...
The Chief of the district can (along with the Marshal) decide what they want within their district. Generally speaking, beards are not a problem with us. That being said, beards are rather uncommon. We have guys with long beards, short beards, no beards, long hair, short hair, shaved heads, goatees, mustaches, and nearly every combination there is. We even have guys with dreadlocks who look like Rastaferians.

We are only allowed to have mustaches, but no beards..The Pa. State Police are not allowed to have any facial hair.
