Rookie Hours and Keeping a Marriage

Got a question for the salty vets who take part with regards to their advice on surviving rookie hours while trying to stay married. I personally am engaged to a woman I've been with for 7 years and I've got a little son who is thrilled about me becoming a LEO. Any words of wisdom?

Don't change anything you do now, and don't bring work home with you.... unless she wants it.

No matter how tired you are, give them some attention when you get home or when you get up. Tell them about your day without telling them about horrible things. Don't tell them about the crackhead that tried to cut you with a knife or the guy you took the gun off of. It will only scare them and make them nervous. Tell them funny stories from work where nobody got hurt.

Your fiance already knows law enforcement is dangerous. You don't need to be reinforcing that to her every day. Try and change your life as little as possible and in the ways you do have to change, do it discreetly.

And, finally. Don't take yourself, or your job, too seriously, when you are off duty.

They call it "off-duty" for a reason.

guess you'll find out just how understanding she really is. it's hard to have a normal life when you are up all night, sleep all day. even when you're off, you sleep all day and stay up all night. and say goodbye to weekends and holidays.

just assure her that eventually, you might get hours like mine.

While off duty, stay that way if at all possible. Call 911 like the best of them but don't get involved in stuff unless absolutely necessary. Make sure she knows that you will do shift work, get called in to court on your day off, have to work late or go in early. Ours is not a M-F 9-5 job.

I'm a rookie. I haven't had a normal sleeping schedule in close to 10 months. Thank god for blinds.

I think that this is the best advice anyone can give you while married and being a LEO. Temptations are out there and the grass might look greener on the other side but trust me it isn't. If you love your wife and son then remember that you are doing this for them. Remember that it is only a job and don't take anything personally.

You may suggest to your Significant Other that she attend a citizens police academy, to have a better idea of what happens. Don't cut off your circle of friends, and only associate with other cops. Keep her informed of what is going on, in a general way. She is your partner, so let her know you care.
And never part without saying "I Love You." It could be the last time you get to say it.
