    Respect

Ok its been a while since I have come up with anything intelligent to say and you might think this is more of the same. :p

How do you get the respect of people that you work with? By work with I mean deal with not fellow officers. For example if you are a rookie and in your early 20's and you have to detain or talk with someone in their 40's and they obviously have more life experince than you. Is it just a matter of how you come across, because I would think that relying on "I'm a police officer!" might not work with some people. Am I wrong in thinking it depends largely on your demeanor?

If this question is foggy or unclear let me know and I'll try to explain further. Although I'm not sure if I can put replies in this section.

Some people, regardless of age, can just talk to other people better. In my area, no one verbally acknowledges this... it just happens that the more easy to speak with guys are the ones always talking to suspects etc..

Same goes for the ones who need a good tongue lashing, if you will. The one with the most attitude always makes his/her presence known.

One can only be so Open Minded before all that mind **** spills out, stains and ruins everything.

My Golden rule is I treat others like they treat me. Age is unimportant to me unless you get to the senior citizen age. Then it start to become relevant in my descion making.

That attitude has got a lot of people a lot older than me to spill the beans for a lack of better terms than playing mister hardass.

Wanna treat me like **** because you think you have a point to prove or want to show off for your buddy/girl? Again, age is unimportant...you'll be coming with me...one way or another...
Be advised, I'm mean nasty and tired. I eat concertina wire and piss napalm and I could put a round through a fleas *** at 300 yards. So why don't you hump somebody else's leg mutt-face before I push yours in.

You can show respect for a person by treating them decently even though you may be half their age. On the other hand, you gotta do what you gota do. If they talk down to you , one could always say in reply " it doesn't take a PHD to determine that you are driving while intoxicated" .

I agree with what has been said so far. I've found sometimes that the older officers do tend to automatically get more respect from older people, however. Also, strangely as it sounds, I've never had one, but I've noticed officers with a moustache tend to get more respect and less attitude.

Most people you deal with are decent and respect the badge no matter who is wearing it, and even thugs are usually decent with you if you treat them right.

We do have quite a bit of what we call "good ol' boy" syndrome around here, mostly old farmer types and people who think their last names are more important than the law. They are more inclined to look at a younger looking officer and think they can get away with more. They are the type that get zero breaks from me if they try to pull that.
