I have two questions, a little obsecure:
1. Have any of you guys and gals had tunnel vision? If so what happened?
2. How do you beat it?
Thanks

Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.

I had it once during a pursuit, I wanted my guy badly. He wrecked but I was so fixated on getting him, I almost wrecked the same way, sliding on wet pavement. Then I was so excited I couldn't talk on the radio right because my guy was trying to drive his wrecked ride away.
It happens. You call out on something happening that goes fast and sideways and you don't hear dispatch calling you.
I believe it happens to all coppers at some point. It took some time, experience and a pointed discussion from the sarge to get me to reevaluate my actions. So you go slower, think things through a little better and you just get a little saltier.
You know the difference between a job and a duty? A job you can refuse to do because it's dangerous; a duty you must do even if it is dangerous.
Normandy Officer Amanda K. Cates DSN 215 Killed 08/29/2006 Rest in peace kiddo you were loved and will be missed terribly. Justice is coming.
i'm pretty good about being alert during a pursuit. i don't get all jacked up until it's over and i realize how stupid that was.
i notice that it happens when i have someone in the sights of my pistol, but at that point, it's usually pretty serious and you're entirely focused on the threat.
Breathe, pay attention to your surroundings. You must look around, while paying attn to you target. If you can realize you are experiencing the tunnel vision, you can think and breathe your self out of it. Just relax.

One can only be so Open Minded before all that mind **** spills out, stains and ruins everything.
Not so much in a pursuit, but as someone mentioned, drawing down on someone had a tendancy to do it for me. Just calming down for a second really helps.
Be advised, I'm mean nasty and tired. I eat concertina wire and piss napalm and I could put a round through a fleas *** at 300 yards. So why don't you hump somebody else's leg mutt-face before I push yours in.
Nothing like watching the hammer on an S&W6906 retract, when facing an armed robber reaching in his pocket. Training, and a mindset to 'win' is the key.
tunnel vision will happen to all officers at some point. and actually i would venture forth to say that it happens more than we actually think. the difference is that we learn to work through it and have our horizion "broaden" so to speak. i always try to think this "slow is smooth, smooth is fast". it seems to help me with purusits or anything tactical.
I do what I can do when I can do it.

Same here the first couple of times. It kinda went away. I know the last time I had two subjects and was looking at them both, but do not recall having tunnel vision.
How come your house has wheels and your car doesn't?
The only time I ever realized I had it was my first car chase.... chasing a neighboring County Sheriff's car (Stolen)
After that, I always tried to become aware and breath, and really never had a noticable bout with again.
