    Question Is This permitted?

I have a question about buying a police car of my own, and using it only for police activity, not joyriding. I am sure if I discover a machincal problem with a dept. car that the boss is going to chew my butt out so much my belly button will fall in. Whether I caused it or not. I am not employed, but I asked to speak with someone about job requirements and such. The gentleman who spoke with me (and who would be my future supervisor) was very intimidating, and seemed to have a way of making grown adults wilt like a flower. I just want to know if I bought a car of my own, out of pocket (no reimbursement) whether I would be allowed to use it on the job. I am not talking about a stock street vehicle, but a fully equipped patrol car. Lights, sirens, the works.

Would it be a waste of effort for me? I live in West Tennessee, if that helps to determine a little better.

P.S.:At another board, I was told that "schoolboys" should go do homework, I sincerely hope this board doesn't share those feelings towards Criminal Justice students.

There are few "Po-Dunk" towns that let, or rather have you, buy your equipment. I don't know about cars. Be forwarned that if you find one that does, they will more than likely not cover you on their insurance.

It is expressly forbidden as per Policy of every agency I know of in my area to use a POV for enforcement activity.

One can only be so Open Minded before all that mind **** spills out, stains and ruins everything.

I guess I am not too sure what you are trying to ask here. Are you saying that, as a Police Officer, you wish to use your own vehicle instead of the vehicle that belongs to the dept? That's what it seems like you are saying. If it is what you mean, then I can't really see why you would do it. It sounds like you are willing to use your own vehicle and pay for it yourself because you are afraid of a supervisor.

Doesn't sound like a good idea to me.

I would not be worrying about the car at this time. Wait until you get the job and then find out what is required of you and department vehicles. I think at this point you are putting the cart before the horse.
How come your house has wheels and your car doesn't?

No way on God's green earth that I would use my own car as a patrol car. The #1 thing that comes to mind is LIABILITY. If the department doesn't or can't provide a cruiser...

thats exactly what i was thinking. even if you could get your insurance to cover you (if you purchased the car i doubt the pd would) you would be paying up the butt for it. the car is the last thing you should be worrying about.
I do what I can do when I can do it.

Let me put it this way..If you buy a car and set it up like a police car, you are going to look like a freakin wacker...If you want to be a cop, go through the process, and drive the departments car.

And, even when it is not forbidden, it is a really, really, bad idea, (ask the ATF agent who had his personal pick up truck shot full of holes and finally pushed away with an M-1 bulldozer tank at Waco after he volunteered its use when they couldn't find a suitable OGV pickup to pull one of the cattle trailers in the raid).
