Step one....exam. Step two...POPAT...Now it's time for Three...

Ok, I've passed everything so far....entrance exam and POPAT. I received a call yesterday asking me to call the department back to book a time for a Sergeant's Interview.

This is the first official interview with anyone (besides casual chit-chat after dropping off documents, application forms, etc).

After this interview I would still have the CVSA (poly), Background interview, Assessment Centre (role playing) and an interview with the chief or deputy chief. There is no peer interview at this department. I am assuming this is an interview with the Staff Development Section to see if I am worth keeping in the races...I could be wrong. Does anyone here have any insight in to what may happen at the 'first' interview and and advice for me?

    Thank you for your help!

Here is the KEY to the hiring process...just keep going on, it's almost impossible to predict what's going to happen since we don't know the particulars of your department or even if we did, it's just a matter of driving on. You're on your way, don't get impatient.

This isn't your first official interview, you've been interviewed everytime that you walk into the dept, or someone who works there sees you around town. One thing applicants should be aware of is that people are always watching you if they know you are an applicant. They learn much more about you from speaking to you casually than from the stiff questions/answers that they hear from your during the "Official Interview".
My advice: Always be on your toes while in the application/recruit phase. Treat EVERY member of the department with due respect- even the janitor. You never know who you may be talking to about your application around/outside the department. I've heard of several people who have gotten a bit brave in the department and made smart or sarcastic comments to/about people only to find out that person was the wife/daughter of some Sgt/officer in the department. Makes you look a bit dumb and lessens your chance of ever finding a job in the department. In my dept. there are 10x more applicants than there are positions- you basically weed yourself out of the pack by acting foolish around the department. Follow all traffic laws, be honest about your past, and don't hang around losers and you'll be well on your way to a LEO job. You don't want to have to explain why you got a speeding ticket on the way to your interview or why your best friend has three drug arrests.

    Good luck!

I would agree with all the above statements. Always act professonal, everything you do is looked on different when you are an applicant. It is true that you will never know who you are communicating with or helping.

    Funny story...

I am a member of a local bike club and ride several times a week. On one of the rides I stopped when I saw a young lady stopped on the street with a problem with her bike (typical on sundays, always stopping to help people).I stopped and was curtious as usual. While I was helping he with one of her tires she told me her name. The name sounded familiar and I asked her if she knew someone with the same last name. It happened to be a local officer for the department that I am applying too and the young lady was his daughter.

You can see you have to always be on your toes, expically when you can be seen.

Good Luck and hope you do well in the rest of the process.

...well what I really could have used was more cowbell.

Actually, my interview is on the 5th with Staff Development...I was told that 'this is my time to shine' and let them know why they should hire me. I need to start figuring out what questions they might ask...
