    motorcycle vs red lights

OK, im sure you all have had this one before, but I honestly would like some honest opinions.

I have a sportbike and anytime after 11pm - 6am, traffic is rare in alot of areas. Being that alot of bikes are made of aluminum and plastic, triggering the traffic light can be a headache!

I've heard people say "from 'this time' to 'this time' u can run it after 2 cycles" etc etc.

What are the laws (if any) regarding this. (in KY possibly?) If you were sitting somewhere and saw a motorcyclist wait a bit then proceed (if there is NO traffic), would you honestly pull them over?

PS: this isnt a big issue around the main parts of town considering they have the pedestrian things on the poles to change the lights.

Try making a right hand turn. It is against the law to run a red light.

Have your found a lot of intersections that did not sense your motorcycle waiting to go straight or turn left?

If that's the case of a particular area, contact their public works. They may have the loop detector set to high and a simple change of the setting would make it more sensative.

Now here is what I would do (my own opinion) -- If I saw a motorcycle in the straight or left turn lane for an extended time frame (several minutes) and the operator made a concerned effort to follow the light and then took the time to look for any traffic and then proceeded though with caution.

I would ignore the motorcyle going though the red light and notify public works of a malfunctioning stoplight. As I mentioned the loop detector could be set too high or broken. I would do the same thing with an automobile or truck.

Some areas the signal won't change from the "main road" with out the press of the walk button or a loop detector trip. I have seen some new stop lights where they are using video cameras as inputs rather then loop detectors.

I have the same problem on my bicycle. Sometimes we just have to go through the red when safe, usually we just go to the crosswalk though...

There is no allowance made in KY statute for running a red light that is not cycling. However, if I did observe someone do so after having waited through a cycle or two (motorcycle or car), I would pull them over to make sure they aren't DUI (I'm a third shifter...you never know) and if not, cut them loose.

They sell infrared sensor type things on ebay, they trip the lights if there is a sensor on it.

Or you could just take Cobra's girl Shanaynay with you when you ride, that should give you enough weight.
