    Foreign Languages

How many of you know a foreign language that helps you on the job? How often do you use it? For those of you who don't, how often do you wish you had learned one? And what foreign languages do you come across most often on the job?

I would assume Spanish is the most common. I ask this because I am taking my fourth year of Spanish, yet I still suck at it. I wanna know how well it's gonna help me if I go on to "master" the language. I have the basics down, I can communicate and hold conversations, but it's mostly simple.

I wsh I could remember two years of spanish that I had in Jr High School. I use what I can remember about once a day now.

Ebonics (foreign language? :D ) is most common here, and used daily also.... but on white kid wannabes.

Get a job in law enforcement in south Florida and the on the job immersion training will have you fluent in no time at all.

It will be a big help there, not only when working, but also when ordering food at drive throughs, asking where something is in a Wal-Mart, getting your car worked on, telling the landscapers how you want your grass cut, etc.

I speak 3 Languages 4 if you count Ebonics (which according to the latest Websters is a recognized language!) SCHOOL spanish as far as what you'll learn classroom wise such as congigation and such will do you little if any good. Very few people that you run across will speak true "SPANISH". I worked in an area of Dallas that is 60% hispanic and they all speak TEX-MEX which any Texas PO's will tell you is a diff. breed. Get a job and take what u know about spanish and get ready to be open minded to a different way of doing things with Spanish on the streets. Am I right or wrong guys?

I picked up quite a bit of Serbo-Croatian while working in Bosnia. It's not hard to learn but quite hard to master. I don't think the Chechen rebels speak Croatian though..Russian for sure and probably a local dialect.

I took French in high school. What a mistake.

Spanish or Tagalog would be great right about now...
Be advised, I'm mean nasty and tired. I eat concertina wire and piss napalm and I could put a round through a fleas *** at 300 yards. So why don't you hump somebody else's leg mutt-face before I push yours in.

757- We have a Croatian center in our town where they have HUGE festivals all summer long. The Serbs and Croats get into huge fights..... these "kids" don't care.. they have already lost their families and homes. We've had a few times when we have had them in group frisks where they start talking to one another in whatever dialect they speak.... you tend to get real tense then. At least with Spanish I knew enough to figure out when they were going to try to run!

I am fluent in Spanish & use my knowledge in my job every day. I work in a call center for 401k's (getting associate's in criminal justice soon) & my BA in Spanish helps me daily.

Yes, it's not surprising that they have brought the hate with them. Granted, the wars that put them at odds are much more recent than our civil war, but it's akin to me going to New York and attacking people there because of what happened then. Most of the younger people that I dealt with over there just wanted to get out so that they could have some kind of life. They still had prejudices but they were nothing like those of the older folk.

I took German in highschool, and there are some germans who come to the park, but they all speak English. I'm trying to learn Spanish on my own. So far I can say, Manos arriba, Enseneme (so I can't spell it) sus manos, and drop the weapon (definently can't spell that in Spanish). I'm planning on taking a class this winter.
