Yes, I'm sure they made the law when the scanner was invented but it is illegal in an MV. There is also questions if when a Sheriff authorizes you to carry a scanner, if that applies statewide or just to the county where that Sheriff has jurisdiction. Luckily I haven't run into anyone yet that actually had a letter.

I've never personally arrested anyone for it, but I wrote a couple of appearance tickets and had a nice collection of scanners going for a while. :D

I could understand if someone had a scanner during the commision of a crime. They shouldn't be illegal, all they do is recieve radio waves and don't transmitt.

Criminals use them to monitor police frequencies to get a jump on us. I don't think they should be allowed in vehicles at all. I'm glad our department went to digital. Use a scanner all you want, you won't pick up our frequency.

Nope, MDT's are safe, but digi isn't. Encrpyt, and you'll be safe, too, but that's pricey...

I would not say MDTs are safe, they too transmit on radio waves, and anything that uses radio waves can be picked up. Anyone remember the rodney king beatings, someone that was able to receive police MDT messages went to the media about how the police wrote messages in their in car computers regarding this incident and I believe the officers involved were the ones that got in trouble for it,that was years ago, we have come very far in technology, but get the right radio techie person, the right scanner, and the right software and a computer and you will be able to monitor MDT traffic, look on the net about the free copies of MDT software that is available for scanner users, althought highly illegal, but can be done.

Digital is not secure. There are several scanners capable of monitoring digital trunked radio.

The only secure radio is encrypted.

Here in Minnesota we are in the process of getting a 800 Mhz trunked digital system state wide. There are currently two digital scanners that are capable of following the talk groups and monitoring them very well.

The only talk groups that are not capable of being listened to are the ones that are encrypted.

Colorado has a statewide digi trunked 800Mhz system. OUr city just hooked into it a few months ago. It is great, but there are a lot of dead spots. Those should, however, clear up when we get our two new towers in the next month or so.

When our new MDTs come, things will be even more advanced.

wpzh, yes, the MDTsniff (or whatever it's called) exists, but since most systems don't use that standard for sending the messages anymore (that and the infrastructure is more advanced, you'd need a logon and pasword to get onto the network), it's useless for major metropolitian areas; Minnesota, for example.

Scanners..I used to listen to mine everywhere I drove. I knew where the "cops" were if you will and what they are doing. I work as a Dispatcher fulltime now and I have not listened to my scanner in months now. It's just somewhere in the car. If I need to know something or if something major has just happened on the interstate that I need to avoid, I just call dispatch.

I'm tired of listening to radio traffic. LOL!
